But what is a fair wage in California or New York would be an absurd wage in Kansas. Vice Versa the wage in Kansas wouldn't allow one to live in these other places. So the wage should also fit the region you live in. But just tipping for crappy service isn't and should never be a standard. I am not saying leave nothing but rewarding poor service and work ethic just empowers the worker to be lazy and average. I don't go out to eat to pay their wages, you can have average food and great service and I would be back. Poor service is just as bad as poor food. I agree they don't need to be a whipping post but how does one know they are doing a crappy job if you don't somehow drop a hint. Critique is critical. How would you suggest that if you always leave 20%? Do you leave great servers even more? It's an old outdated practice. I don't feel like I should have to tip someone just because that is the practice. If you do above and beyond, then certainly tip, just for doing your job, no. Minimum wage in Kansas also needs raised. Albeit, most places pay more than the $7.25 minimum wage that is not a rate someone can live off of. That's only $290 for a 40 hour work week before taxes.
