Keep in mind that the only vessel that came to the Liberty’s aid was Soviet Guided Missile Destroyer 626/4 who signaled the Liberty asking if it could assist. The liberty’s captain refused help and the destroyer signaled “I’ll stand by in case you need me.” It stayed and protected it until U.S. vessels arrived many hours later.
