But they still call themselves "Christians:" are they really Christians even though they hate Jesus?

And, quoting centuries of mothers saying to their children, "I Am Not Cleaning That Up!"

Rev. Emeritus Eric S. Kilmer

More foundational reasoning for treating Christians as mentally ill and worse, as people whose belief causes violence and destructiveness in society. All that remains is for our secular social engineers to call for the 'cleansing' of our culture of this cancer called faith. Christians are not accusing unbelievers of mental illness, (even though God's Word declares, "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us."), but now the cultural dictates that Christians be deemed sociopathic.

Rain Adkins

I do see more and more sociopathy in the Evangelical churches. It's growing at a horrible rate. But I can't say everyone and every church in that spectrum is sociopathic. I still know a decent number of exceptions; there really is a small but vital Evangelical Left. Long may it wave...but I fear a lot of those folks will, sooner or later, just give up.

But there are plenty of evangelical Christians who do not interpret the Bible that way and do follow Jesus' teaching. This author has cherry-picked some of the worst quotes possible, and ignored all those Christian leaders who are doing everything they can to bring Jesus' peace, love and light to everyone in the world.

Laurel Kornfeld

Dobson outright lies by omission in a "cautionary tale" he tells parents to share with their pre-teen children in his authoritarian book "The Strong Willed Child." He cites a story from 1970 in which a 15-year-old girl became blind from watching a solar eclipse as an example of the terrible consequences of "disobedience." It's very clear from the story that this girl was simply curious, which is normal for someone her age. He ends by saying she had to adapt to living in a world of darkness, conveniently leaving out the fact that she actually got her sight back two months later (according to newspaper records), after having prayed to God every night. The fact that he leaves this part out is disingenuous; he uses those aspects of the story that support his viewpoint and ignores those that do not. What else are he and those like him lying about? They actually justify the concept of"heavenly deception" if it's for the purpose of "saving souls."

Pat Mc Ginley

Religious institutions are political movements, firmly embedded with the ruling elite in every religious country. Therefore, they maintain a deafening silence on unjust laws which benefit the rich at the expense of the poor, wars-for-profit, etc. In return they get the usual perks bestowed on pillars of the Establishment. This church/state mutual back-scratching goes all the way back to Emperor Constantine. It became more prominent in '70's U.S. to coincide with the increasingly right-wing lurch which has resulted in the U.S. now being a corporate-controlled oligarchy, confirmed by a Princeton University 20 year-long research.

S.Rajeevan

Like each and every living beings human is also part and parcel of this universe, controlled by the Almighty. The. Hindu way of life is to live and let other living beings to live. PL note unless the other way of thought, god created other living beings for the survival of mankind only and their consumption. No it's a cycle the end of one is the beginning of the other. It's a related matter. Like plants give us oxygen after photosynthesis by processing carbon dioxide. So the specific relationship we have to accept. So the birth and death the outcome of the karma, the Hindu beliefs. In other words god is everywhere and with in each and every one. If it is a living beings the presence of God is there. So we should respect not only human being but all living beings. That's the VASUDEVAKUDUBHAM.

The level of mental illness in the US, particularly in those who claim to be 'christyuns' is staggering! Believing in a fictional god, a fictional jesus & that disgusting book of lies and fairy tales, the 'bar-bull' is an infection that's reached epidemic and continues to interfere with every aspect of American life. Moronic politicians are destroying a once OK country, making it the laughing stock of the world as well as the most hated nation on Earth.

christopher buczek

My brother and sister-in-law became church-going evangelicals 20+ years ago after the birth of their first child. They've since raised three amazing kids, the youngest of whom just graduated high school. I love them all, they're good kin, decent and honest and caring and kind, and if they have a problem with my being gay I've never heard about it. Do I respect their belief system? I can't say I do. Not because I doubt their sincerity, or disagree with it doctrinally, but because literal belief in the bible seems a punishing hall of mirrors for the mind to inhabit. The scriptures must be accepted as the revealed word of God, finite and immutable, subject only to the narrowest interpretations. These words delimit a privileged covenant with the Creator and fix its boundaries; within lies salvation and eternal life, without is endless darkness and suffering. Given this steeply-stacked perspective the inherent messiness of life, its protean and constantly shifting realities which require and reward flexibility and adaptation (see Growth) are perceived as perpetual threats. The mind responds by ping-ponging within the walls it has erected, papered over with bible quotes chapter and verse.

Is this sociopathic? Not from where I stand, but it does looks more like deep and constant anguish than the comfort and security that is promised in the bible.

Oscar DeVoe

The original question wrongly makes a huge assumption. "Has Evangelical Christianity Become Sociopathic?" assumes that it was once a religion that wasn't sociopathic. This contention has yet to be demonstrated. The biblical underpinnings are shown in the bible and many are clearly sociopathic; slavery, stoning people to death, etc.
