Humility is the only way to honestly embrace our difficult past. We should take it as a cautionary tale. If it's not fostering unity and peace and taking steps toward understanding, then we have done and are doing religion wrong. People of faith have to come to a place where our faith traditions enable rather than hinder the common good not just our particular brand of good. We are all in this 'life thing' together. People of faith should be on the front lines of the fight for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all of humanity.

The las pogrom in Poland was just after the war, on those who came back from the camps. Now all over occupied europe catholics and convents did hide jews. Their religion is not questionable! Hitler invaded the Soviet Union to rid the world of Bolsheviks a.k.a. Atheists and gain the admiration of the pope in a futile attempt to reunite a splintered Christianity. How is that not about religion? At the Malta conference Churchill gave eastern Europe to Stalin to keep the Soviet Union out of Greece and Italy in order to keep early Christian sites out of Bolshevik hands. In particular Rome and the Vatican. The British were frantic to reach Rome because the Soviets were quickly approaching and Churchill didn't trust Stalin not to take Rome and plunder the Vatican.

The Holocaust in particular had nothing to do with religion; there were many Christians who died in it, including Jehovah's Witnesses and people who happened to have a Jewish ancestor three or four generations back which qualified them as Jews by the Nazis' racial ideology, irrespective of what religion they practiced. The Crusades and other medieval wars are also poor examples. Everyone knows that the medieval Catholic Church was corrupt and driven primarily by very worldly political influences and greed. Religion was used as a disguise for these conflicts but was far from the actual motivations. Likewise, the Thirty Years War and other conflicts of the Protestant reformation were more about the desire for Germanic principalities and newly-founded republics to separate themselves from the political influence of the pope, not about doctrine. There is very little doctrinal difference in truth between Catholicism and Protestantism. Yes, it's wrong and hypocritical for Christians to treat Islam as if it is a uniquely violent religion, and these historical events and others can legitimately be brought up to prove otherwise, but this article's intention is more to bash Christianity over the head with a hammer than it is to demonstrate how *any* religion can be corrupted by nefarious worldly and secular influences when there is an insufficient separation between church and state. It also fails to define what Christianity even is in the first place, and the claim that slavery is justified by "biblical originalism" is especially egregiously specious given that the New Testament, which is the basis of Christianity, cannot be reasonably construed to justify the practice, at least not when translated properly. Just by looking at the Sermon on the Mount, it is blatantly obvious that all of these crimes are wholly inconsistent with the essential tenets of Christian morality as taught by Christ himself. As with Islam, the problem lies not with the religion, but with those who choose to practice it halfheartedly and are only interested in using bits and pieces of it to promote their own agendas, instead of submitting themselves to its teachings as a whole.

The classical world had slavery and forms of nationalism but not racism in the modern sense. Blame has gone to various cultures and religious types, and it's possible that the Library had multiple acts of destruction rather than just one, going back to Julius Caesar, who may have accidentally burned part or all of the Library during the siege of Alexandria (according to Plutarch, he was forced to set some of his own ships on fire and it spread to the Library). There are other possible events, described here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_of_the_... The destruction of the Library is a great tragedy, and as a history and book nerd, it always makes me sad, but it can't be definitively blamed on any single group.
