We are all born implicit atheists but than taught the prevailing belief system by parents and society. It was much harder to justify explicit Atheism before Descartes and the scientific method because we simply didn't know or understand much about the Universe. Now it is getting ever harder to justify any faith in the supernatural... without offering some possibility and/or techniques for a deeper self awareness the Abrahamic religions will fade into mythology as did the pagan religions. Spirituality and introspective based religions like Buddhism, some modified animistic systems or new self focused spirituality/self improvement doctrines have a chance of surviving.

Not really. I agree that everyone is born without a belief in deities but I disagree with what you state afterwards.

Not everyone in Canaan believed in the many gods, the idols. Israeli scribes made YOU WILL HAVE NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME the first commandment to force their beliefs on others. There were inquisitions and executions for not believing till the 1800's here. We had blasphemy laws here, put people in jail, tortured them, or killed them for just questioning the existence of god till 1971. If being an atheist seems new it's because it was illegal for us to speak about non belief till then. And of course we are all born atheists. It's our parents or others that tell us there is a god, a hell, and we need to be 'saved' from something. No one would believe in a god it someone else did tell us there was one at some point.

He should have added the Tondrakians, an atheistic cult in the dark ages who destroyed religious monuments and burned down churches. The Catholics, orthodox Christians, and Muslims all agreed to work together to wipe them out. And still they persisted for hundreds of years.

There is nothing new but collecting pieces from here and there to sell the material. Is it a controversy that atheism has not been around in the world in one form or other? Absolutely Not. The Author is trying to assert some thing which is ridiculous and should not even be the topic of any discourse. It is sheer wastage of people's time.
