Very well written, and pretty comprehensive summary of the problems of irrational faith. A key point that those who espouse a revealed religion, such as Christianity, Judaism, or Islam, should pay much heed to, is that these religions actually prevent critical and reflective thinking. Study of Human Consciousness and its machinations, is the real work in spirituality. Of the mainstream religions, only Buddhism really takes the time to do this, and even then, somewhat poorly.

It's sad how religion can control and inhibit. I am so glad I'm not alone on this one. And with a degree in psychology do you know how hard it was to converse with my husband? Amazing we were together at all. I'm sorry, he is/was a devout Church of Christ, Bible "authority" crap church goer. It has debilitated the entire family from living a healthy life. Most suffer from deep depression and cannot even leave the house. From birth to grave...............

I've always thought it is interesting to read the copyright page in Bible translations. The restrictions retained show the fraud that goes into what they spout and that their religion is only about power and control. Of course the King James Version's copyright has expired and it is in the public domain. That's why it's the version that is given away for proselytization, as they don't have to pay the rights holder.

The thing that bothers me about what i see in most religions...it's all about what you can't have and what you can't do. The world and the government puts limitations on us everyday. There are laws we have to obey, We can't murder or steal. Jail is hell on earth. We don't need a faraway fictional fiery furnace to stay in line. And we don't need to put any undue limitations on ourselves. And the way the bible treats women and children has caused the mindset throughout time and across the world that sanctions torture and misery by misguided men AND women who drown their kids because "God said so." What kind of life does a woman have to be required to wear black wool in the heat of the desert? To cover her face as if its a source of SHAME? It causes women to be labeled a S1ut because she wears a short dress. And it justifies when she gets raped. The man goes free and she is stoned for dishonor. Instead of blaming the girl for what she wears why aren't our boys being taught to behave around girls in a decent manner?

The article was interesting. A few thoughts. Although many atrocities have been caused by organized religion, how many lives have been saved by the teachings of " thou shall not kill, or love your neighbor as you love yourself "? As far as science goes, the more I learn about the laws of physics the more I believe that there is a law giver, who could be called God. I love science. From the cosmos to the smallest of particles, it is all to perfect for me to believe that it was all an accident. I love science but there are many gaps that are unknown. If some of the smartest people in the world can believe in string theory, which is says there are many of you in different dimensions, why is the concept of a human spirit or another dimension called heaven so far fetched? Some of the smartest people who ever lived were believers in a creator. That being said everyone has a right to their beliefs or lack of. It's called respect.

Religion is destroying our world. In every place in this world, throughout history, humans have created fictional, metaphysical beliefs to explain the events of the natural world. Humans have forever used religion to control the masses. But we live in a modern world now, where science can provide answers to the questions that ancient people used to rely on religion. It is beyond my understanding how people still follow ancient books and believe in an invisible man in the sky. I am a believer in proof, and so far, religion has failed miserably to prove to me the existence of God, or that being a part of a particular club of similar minded backward thinking fools is of any value to my life. When I was a teenager and learned about the Holocaust, I knew then that there was no God to speak of, but unfortunately, everywhere I looked, everyone else was speaking about him like he was real. Whether you are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Jehova's Witness, you are living in the past. You are hanging on to very old beliefs created by primitive people with limited knowledge. I am always disgusted when I hear Christian people say they have a "personal" relationship with God. If someone is hearing God I suggest they check themself into a psych ward, because they are clearly hearing things that don't exist. The "relationship" these good Christians refer to is a feeling created by them and their happy little fairy-tale world view that they want to live in. They want to believe that there is a God that loves them so they simply go on believing it. They fantasize their God. And they fantasize their happy, peaceful, insular world to feel safe and loved. And they fantasize their eternity in heaven through works and/or strong conviction so they have another warm happy place in the afterlife. They are afraid of the real world! Religion is destroying our world! Long before ISIS, I knew the Muslim religion was awful! The Muslim religion hates non-Muslims. The Quran states that non-Muslims are animals, unclean, and helpers of the devil. It states that Muslims should not be friends with non-Muslims. The Quran states that people of other religions are to be violently punished in this world. I thought fundamentalist Christians were backward until I read up on Muslims. Talk about Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs! As long as humans are living in the past, people will continue to have serious problems sharing this world with one another and the incessant violence will continue.

The author of this article shows little familiarity with the progressive schools of thought in various religions. Many (if not most) people participating in modern Judaism, Christianity, and Buddhism regard the sacred texts metaphorically and specifically strive to update their practice to be relevant to the world we live in now.

Religion is tradition. Traditions are old views, lets all be pro-active and realize we all need to change or we won't move forward. Religion is the old way and more and more people are realizing that. My wife is a preachers kid and i have shown her "the light." Come on everybody, lets bring all the "old way" believers into the light. Quit being delusional and start working on fact. Religious people please dont trust DNA science results in a murder case, or how your phone was invented but dont believe in science when it comes to how old humanity is. Im a little drunk so pardon the phrases that are used.

Interesting. What a lot of people don't take into account is that there are over two billion different religions out there, one for each person who believes in some ultimate being, and about five billion views about it among those who don't. The attempt to enforce conformity is more destructive than belief. It's that attempt that becomes religion as deconstructed here.

All concepts are created by mankind - even science. Each has at its base a fundamental concept of identity. Religions are good concepts of identity. Science has at its base the concept of matter and nothing beyond - there is a fault in this conception of identity as well. Think not that science has any thing to do with truth just as religions do not. It is not about truth.

Sorry but as usual, the atheist continues to define his/her notions of religion based on one group only: fundamentalists. I guess your arguments lose most of their punch when addressed to mainstream folks of faith. We are, shockingly, scientists, writers, historians, and experts in all fields of endeavor. We don't think science is bad, we think it is a great thing, and we don't believe most of the crap that fundies do...Yet you continue to paint with a fundamentalist brush as if we were all the same. Religion is not as old as humanity. It arrives around 7000 years ago. Ancient Archaeological finds from the past which were labeled religious have since been understood to have been labeled religious due to the preconceived notions of the Archaeologist.

Our most ancient human settlements have no evidence of war of death by human hands.

No question about it, people who think they know how the world "really" works, think they have a method of knowing that is far superior to that of others, and therefore also pride themselves on the relative superiority of their worldview in contrast to all those others who are not so enlightened, and who apparently have no sense of self-criticism or irony about disparaging others for their foolishness, are a potential danger to others in this world.
