MareeStelle

My parents were married at the tail end of 1979 and stayed their honeymoon at the famously haunted Lamothe House in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Like so many other old buildings in the city, this hotel was built in the 1830s and seems beautiful and frayed, stuffed lavishly with French design; frills and checkered floors, angels and faded lace and portraits of dashing Creole men. A common sighting there is a dead young woman in a beautiful red dress who wanders through the doorways. You can hear children laugh right behind you. Guests regularly capture faces in their photos.

Treeless

4 years ago I awoke from a sound sleep, unable to move. I opened my eyes wide, and saw two people standing at the foot of my bed, facing away from me--on the left, a short, elderly white-haired woman with rounded shoulders, wearing a print dress . . . on the right, a taller man with a handlebar mustache and sideburns in a checked red shirt and a ball cap. He had his left arm draped protectively around her shoulders. While I lay there staring in disbelief, the man turned over his shoulder between himself and the woman, and stared at with me with a great hatred. My fear, needless to say, was intense. As he did so, both of them faded from view. Mind you, this was the night before the Presidential election. I'm certain it was just an instance of waking mid-anxiety-dream, with sleep paralysis still in effect. But it looked and felt utterly real, and was scary as hell. If I hadn't watched a special on Discovery about sleep disturbances and their contribution to belief in ghosts, witches, demons, & aliens, I would have been utterly sold.

Belly_Button

I debated posting this because it may or may not be a ghost story. I was sick with the flu and I got up and walked towards my bathroom. I got lightheaded almost immediately and sat/fell. It was a controlled fall. A man wearing a flannel button down shirt and dark blue jeans came towards me, from the bathroom, with his hands out as if to say "are you okay?" It was the same reaction anyone has when someone falls. He was concerned and was trying to help me. Then he was gone. That was it. I sat on the floor completely shocked for the longest time. I think it is very possible that I was just running a fever, got lightheaded, and hallucinated it. It just felt so real that I'll always wonder.

deleted8319393

I don't know how ghostly this is or isn't, but it spooked me mildly. My grandma (mother's mother) died a few years ago. When we cleaned out her home, I took a couple boxes of stuff home with me and also a beautiful lamp she had since the 40s or 50s (P-lala, if you're reading this, you know the lamp I'm talking about). The lamp works fine, and I love it. I use it exclusively for task lighting when I'm sitting at my desk. So anyway, 2 - 3 months ago, out of the blue, I had a very vivid dream about my mother and her mother. The next day as I was emailing my mom, I mentioned that I had had a very vivid, intense dream the night before (though didn't tell her what about). She replied, telling me she had also had a very vivid, intense dream the night before. I immediately wrote back, asking what she had dreamed. She wrote back and said that she had dreamed about her mother. I know, it's possible it's just a weird coincidence, but mom and i were both a little spooked by it. A couple days go by; I'm in my apartment at night watching TV. I go to the kitchen to refresh my drink, and when I come back into the living space, grandma's lamp is turned on. I call and tell my mother, who tries to explain it away. First she suggests I forgot I had turned the lamp on, but I know this isn't true. I never leave the lamp on while I'm watching television because it casts a reflection both in the television's bezel and in a framed photograph behind the television, and I find it distracting. Then mom says that because the lamp is old, it must have just turned itself on. I'm not an electrician so I won't say it's impossible that there was some sort of malfunction, but the lamp has never done anything like that before (or since). The switch is not loose, the cord and plug are in fine condition. Did grandma turn the lamp on? I dunno, but it sure spooked me.

Mean_Ol_Liberal

OK, this didn't happen to me. It happened to Mr. MOL. As he tells it, he was riding the Manhattan bound J train from Woodhaven. This was some 20 years ago and he was a college student, which meant he was nocturnal. Mornings were not his thing. This train ride was in the late AM, so he was half asleep and had drifted into that Subway Stare - that look straight ahead without really focusing on anything. He said that within this soft gaze, he'd seen a guy sitting on the bench seat directly across from him. The guy's clothing was dark and Mr. MOL cannot recall his face. As is typical on the J train, the train stopped in the middle of the tunnel for some routine issue or another. This happened to my friend's brother's friend about 20 years ago. She went hiking throughout Yosemite for a week, solo. She had a great time and camped out under the stars every night. She went to develop her photos after she got home and there were pictures of her asleep from every night of the trip.

skinny_vanilla

Also, my bf's old house (which was once a relative's, who died there) was crazy haunted, he'd see his relative walking down the hall and doors would ALWAYS open themselves. I was staying there alone one night and was super paranoid about the house being broken into so I always triple checked doors and windows. I'd lock each one and test it to make sure it was set, put sticks in the sliders, etc. Like OCD levels of checking. Not only had his stories of open doors scared me, but I'm fairly paranoid about home invasions - basically there is no way I would have left anything open. Anyway, I had a fairly sleepless night, the dog was super restless and kept getting in and out of bed. Woke up to let him out and the stick is out of the slider with the door cracked open. I hated that place.

skinny_vanilla

I used to work for a company that had a field office at a "stigmatized" location. Most everyone had stories of things going bump and rattle, and these were not friendly spirits. TVs turning on and off, feeling someone behind you, hearing voices, that kind of thing. Here are the two that happened to me: First, I was sitting with a group of 3-4 people and we had just gotten to that site so we were talking about how funny it was that everyone was so spooked, clearly this place was not haunted. It was a gorgeous sunny early fall day, no wind. As we're laughing about it, all of a sudden all of the doors and windows slammed shut and the TV and radio both crank up to double the volume. It lasts for a few seconds and then dies down. Second, and IMO creepier, I was there after hours with three male co-workers. I decided to head home, walked out the door and was about 100 feet away from the building when all three guys bolted out looking terrified and asking if I was ok. I was super confused and told them I was fine. Apparently they thought something was wrong because after I walked out they all heard "me" screaming bloody murder. I never heard a thing.
