I was looking at old photos from the Prohibition era and this one cracked me up.

The first photo, "gyre", is of a sculpture by Thomas Sayre. It's located just a few miles from my home at the North Carolina Museum of Art. The giant rings were created on site in 1999. Elliptical trenches were dug and filled with steel rods and concrete colored with iron oxide. Once the concrete had cured, the rings were lifted into place.
