The Old inspector

If I may, suggest a possible bursa sac injury. I had serious shoulder pain and my orthopedist discovered a small rotor cuff tear. During surgery, he discovered my bursa sac was more than twice normal size, and was pushing shoulder out of socket. Hence causing great pain. Ironically, my chiropractor, that I bowl with, mentioned this well in advance of the surgery.

Alan

Find a new orthopedic doctor who will do a hands-on evaluation of your shoulder, to include putting it through range of motion against tension. You may need an MRI or other diagnostic x-ray (not just a plain old x-ray that only shows bony injury). You may have an actual rotator cuff tear, which can only be repaired via a surgical intervention. The current orthopedist is just blowing you off.

Ellen L. Trumpler

As someone who enjoys bowling and who has physical therapy for all kinds of conditions - including elbow and shoulder injuries - the idea of "compensation" - training a different arm/shoulder to bowl with and "conditioning' - exercising surrounding muscles of the upper torso/shoulder area - are quite important. Another "C" - "cortisone" treatment is good too. It has also been found that Synvisc or Monovisc (gel injections) relieve pain in the shoulder area with various shoulder conditions. Surgery helps too (as a last resort)

Walter Reed

I am an avid lawn bowler, however due to shoulder injury end result is little or no pain most times when bowling with my RIGHT arm. However when I really put force on the delivery and stretch out my arm the pain was agonizing and after the game would ache for hours, sometimes all night. One day a friend told me to try bowling with my LEFT arm when looking to apply force and stretch and use my RIGHT arm for the fine shots where no force is needed. It worked, now I enjoy my bowls just about pain free. A great feeling, try it and I wish you all the best. Cheers, Walter Reed

Rich Carrubba

Wow Bill, this is a tough one....we are not doctors and certainly would not wish to recommend anything which could cause further discomfort just trying to bowl.... It makes sense to lay off bowling until you figure out what the problem is specifically. Have your doctors suggested pinched nerves in your shoulder area? How about torn ligaments or tendon damage? I used to get stinger injuries playing football and they would cause severe pain and loss of shoulder mobility but they would subside in a relatively short while. Pinched nerves can be tough to deal with but we are not sure if that is your problem.... If therapy has not helped then perhaps you need to consult other specialists to identify your problem. No one should live with the continual pain you are describing. You know your body best. If it hurts to bowl, don't bowl. Why suffer and not enjoy and real performance levels you may have been accustomed to in the past because of injury. Our recommendation is to seek other medical consultation or see a sports physician who may know a specialist to help with this problem. This may not be what you wanted to learn from us but we want the best for you and are compelled to give you sound advice the best we can. We are sorry to learn of this discomfort and wish you all the best. Please let us know if they find out what is the exact problem.

Bill

i messed up my shoulder back in may, i have been going to therapy and orthapedic doctor. One said you cant injure your self from bowling. Then said I had a low pain tolorance. I have done full contact martial arts for over 30 years, weight lifted and have never had an injury this long. I only bowled 2 games. I did try to smash the pins. Xray shows no broken bones, or dislocation. MRI showed nothing either. But to this day I cant put no pressure on shoulder and have no lateral movement. When in bed at night it feels like someone smashed my shoulder with a sledge hammer and it all pieces inside. I have to physically hold it with my left hand to eliminate the pain. I ve tried stretching and occpational therapy, this long makes no sense. any suggestions on to what it could be?
