Great balls of ire

My two cents; the boy fell while playing on the balcony. perhaps he was trying to jump onto the chandelier - recreating something often seen in movies. The now-dead girlfriend, Rebbeca Z and her sister were blamed by the boy's father, Jonah, for not keeping an eye on the boy. The brother was commissioned by the father to fake her suicide while the father was in hospital with his ex-wife watching over the comatose boy. The brother played music loudly for a while the night that Rebecca died - which the neighbours heard as a party, (right, the night after a child from the home is in near death state in hospital, party time!?) but was simply using the music to obscure any sound of the unfortunate Rebecca Z being beaten over the head, rendering her unconscious so he could action the fake suicide plan. Jonah Shacknai has a history of domestic violence according to police. His ex-wife sounded frightened when she said to police, “Jonah is the CEO of a large pharmaceutical corporation. He is very clever and very powerful.” As others on this thread have mentioned, the painted note was a clear piece of misdirection, clever too, as using a paint brush meant little chance of handwriting recognition.

Myrtle

What I found interesting is the tone of the LA Times' reporting. "Nothing to see here! All tidied up, case closed!" Brisk. I don't think so, what hasn't been told yet? I don't like the look of Dad/Boyfriend and the fact that he was selling drugs bugs me. Sure, legit, but with that much money and free samples roaming around... Meh, this case stinks of lies and coverup. Of all of these people, I feel only the little boy is innocent. To me it seems he got shoved in a temper fit-now I wonder by who? The woman was nude, funny there's no mention if there was evidence of rape.

It certainly seems like the brother is at least involved in some no-so-good way.

Lucky

Unless the "him" wasn't referring to the kid, and she was covering for someone? I'm talking completely out of my ass, but that's the first thing I thought.

pssshwhatever

Agreed, which is why my first impression was that perhaps someone blamed her for his injury/death. Although I honestly have no idea, it really makes very little sense. Still getting a skeevy vibe about the brother, though.

writesforfood

Where is Dominick Dunne when you need him? The manner of the child's death (falling over the balcony and grabbing the chandelier) reminds me of the death of the mother in the remade The Omen (the one with Liv Schreiber). She fell over the balcony and grabbed hold of the chandelier but then fell from it. I'd be looking hard at the brother. He sounds like a piece of work.

Delta Sierra

Thanks for the update, DQ. I live 2hr north of San Diego and have been semi-following this. Didn't know these latest details. The original reporting soon after the woman's death was really confused, difficult to understand who died first, the boy or the woman. A police statement I read a few days ago said it wasn't totally unheard of for suicides to bind their hands and feet, to stop themselves changing their minds half way through. Coronado is a beautiful area. Some Like It Hot was filmed there, the Hotel Del's roof is the one in the chase scene.

pssshwhatever

It still doesn't seem quite right though, does it? He was on life support the entire time, so the prognosis was likely grim from the outset, and why would anyone kill her because she may have saved a kid from an accidental death? If the death wasn't an accident, who was in the house that we don't know about? If it was an accident, why reference it in the message if the killer truly thought she had saved the kid?

pssshwhatever

The message is odd, because it doesn't jibe with any of the actual facts of the case, as far as I can tell. She didn't save him. Unless she was launched off the balcony before he had actually died. But even then, if the 13-year-old sister was the only other person present when the little boy died, it would seem impossible that the boy and the girlfriend have a common killer. I'd be checking the part-throwing brother's alibi pretty hard.

Ice Shaman

The article doesn't say that Shacknai was at the party, but rather that it was potentially hosted by his brother. So the father could well have been at the hospital while his brother held a raucous party at the house. Doesn't say much good of the brother, but doesn't indict the father either.

Ice Shaman

That doesn't really jive with the message "she saved him, can you save her?", unless the message was supposed to be really sarcastic. I also agree that tying one's hands and feet behind one's back, and stuffing a t-shirt in one's own mouth really does not sound like suicide to me. Why go to such odd lengths to accomplish something that could be far more easily accomplished with a gun or pills?

pssshwhatever

It seems to me that there is a huge gulf between "not physically impossible" and "in any way indicative of a suicide." My bet, based on only this info, is that someone (maybe the boyfriend, maybe the brother) held the girlfriend responsible for the child's death since the was home when he fell. If he really did fall. This really is a bizarre case.
