Self promotion of their other software and ads can do better at times than a sale on Android Market. Our emulators were more spotlighted than others though, in terms of branding and reach. He also fixed some long standing bugs in gpSP's source and sent the fixes back to Exophase. I know he's done at least some giving back, and has done impressive work. Know that these aren't simple compile for a new platform and go. This takes a large understanding of such code and the platforms involved. This is not a simple task. Yongzh was one of the few capable to do this, especially at such a scale. There's lots of paid emulators. One you may know of was Bleem. There's quite a few on AppStore and Market from the actual game companies themselves as well. There's a few like FPSE, as you just mentioned, who are not part of a game company but sell their emulators. You get what you pay for.
