1.) Yes, the bootloaders on the iPhone 2G have been ripped apart. Pwnage can do it, make sure you have "Install BootNeuter" checked and whatnot. (should be default for the iPhone)

2.) I don't think you typically do, but it doesn't hurt. Just pop it in. Don't be scared, A sim card isn't going to make the 2G explode. Just make sure you tick "Activate iPhone" when you are about to build your ipsw.

3.) I haven't really seen this issue ever. I've been using the latest iTunes and not having to worry about it. Just toss it into DFU mode. If it does pull an error, the iPhone isn't bricked in the least. Just DFU again and try again. The only thing the latest iTunes will do is pull errors on unsigned ipcc files. I'm surprised the patched CommCenter, using MuscleNerd's patch, accepted my old T-mobile ipcc file on 3.1.2 (3G).

You'll be fine. iPhone 2G are practically failproof. At least all the software stress tests I've put mine through.

I want to give a public thank you to Musclenerd for showing me the way for patching CommCenter to accept unsigned .ipcc files on my iPhonr 3G 16Gb 3.1.2 on Tmobile USA. All the loves of 3.0.1 but with apps that actuall run since they were built on 3.1. Showing my appreciation for bring Web/MMS/Tethering back to me.

So I am quite curious to how the progression of MMS/APN are on the 3G 3.1.2. I currently have used Spookynet's ipcc to give me tethering, apn, mms. But since ipcc are signed I didn't have the greatest 3.1.2 experience, not to mention the lack of tethering. So while lurking around I see that a combination of 2 apps (the MyWi trick) will give me default tethering back. So I'm interested in 3.1.2 finally. Here is the kicker though. I could never manually get the APN and MMS settings to work out right. My APN has to be internet2 where as my MMS must be wap. When manually entering these settings it always changed MMS back to internet2. Which is bad news bears for me. I'm just looking for the rumors being cut so I can finally take a decent plunge into 3.1.2 if I can get default tethering back and no conflicts between APN and MMS addresses. On that note, I'm on T-mobile USA. Thanks

Thanks, I've been around the block on multiple dev projects (xbox, wii, dreamcast, intellivision, cable/satellite). You gotta read and once you are comfortable to 'take the plunge' then do so. Don't complain about a free lunch. lol

I'll give kudos to the dev team but they need a disclaimer for the people that updated their Baseband. I don't want to sound like a troll but if you upgraded your Baseband with a factory 3.1+ and do not have the 5.08 bootloader then YOU ARE HOSED!

I'm sorry for those who "mistakenly updated" or "bought it that way" then you officially have an iPod Touch until the 5.xx.xx Baseband is broken. Sadly, asking how much longer doesn't make it come out any faster or IF it it can even be broken into.

On that note, this is a development community. Development is a slippery slope, you must read and do your homework to use their work. They warned you about updating, if you did you're sol. Sell the iPhone in an attempt to find one with a baseband of 4.xx.xx. Then read before updating. Be happy for everything they've given you for free, just don't berate them for "user error."

Everyone that is updating to 3.1+ I ask why per se? It is ridden with new signatures that take most the loved features away (carrier bundles, tethering etc.) I'm on iPhone 3G 3.0.1 on Tmobile USA. I went to 3.1 and it was horrible with lockouts and saw no new feature aside from arranging icons via itunes. The day I upgrade is the day they figure out carrier bundles and tethering. Til then, no dice. And if Appstore apps complain that they won't run on the older firmware just download FWchanger and mask it to 3.1.2.

Just my two cents, The dev team give gifts to us all, just to have their blog full of irate people demanding a fix for their mistakes.
