part three
I think the media is the blamed that immigrants are being portrayed as bad people. The times that I heard something about the immigrants through television are immigrants being in crimes and Immigrants getting associated with gangs. I guess the media wants to portray immigrants as bad people so when the audience is witnessing these things on television they are more likely to believe it and make stereotype thoughts. And this is when discrimination begins to play a part. I don’t understand why people who are immigrants go through discrimination because in my opinion they are not committing a crime, they’re just trying to make their life better and their family.

I believe people fear against immigrants because if too many of them come over then the American culture might have a transition. People might not accept the idea that things might become more multicultural since there are many different ethnic backgrounds in this country. More immigrants might change things such as the language English not being the primary language for this country or having a president from an immigrant family/background. I think that people just want things to be the American way so they can deter other people from other countries not to come.
I see it ironic that people are so against immigrants and don’t recall the history of when the pioneers were immigrants and took the land from the Native Americans. For the Native American, the first Europeans were immigrants and came over without any consent and the Europeans believed that there was nothing wrong with that. I guess people think someone might come around and take over the United States.

Since Immigration is such a hot topic for the past years, I believe that the reason why the society dislikes immigrants is because people are coming over for jobs. I think what makes people upset is that the economy is bad and people are looking for job but yet the available jobs are being taken away by immigrants. But then again, most Americans would not pick apples in the farm in California for 5 bucks per hour. Immigrants would grab any job opportunity that is available no matter the salary, the type of job and the conditions of the job. Instead of disliking immigrants, people should respect them because most of them have come a long way to finding a job and earn some type of money. From the video that Richards showed us about the immigrants waiting in the corner in New York for the Colombian guy to come give them free food. That clip shows how some of these immigrants are courageous enough to come over knowing they might be homeless but are willing to do anything in order to find a job.

Learning about the obstacles and poor life of some of these Native American made me realize how we shouldn't celebrate the day Columbus discover America because the truth is we stole land from these indigenous people. And its messed up how in grade school we learn that we discover land instead of the actual truth.

It was interesting to see that there were many derogatory for Native American. I didn't know there were any offensive words to describe them. What got me thinking was the word “redskin”. If that particular word is considers a derogatory word then how come there is a football team named redskins. I'm pretty sure this offends Native Americans in every levels but since people are so ignorant and believes that naming a sport team redskin is representing Native American in a good way then people think there is nothing wrong.
I believe that us Americans should give something back to them, like an apology or more than a apology. We have destroy nearly all of them and if they ever become wiped out, it will be because of us Americans. I actually sit next to a girl in Soc class who is full Native American and she is such a humble person and sometimes she talks about her life living in a reservation and describes these awful reservations. Its a pleasure to be able to meet her because she was nice enough to tell my friend and I about her culture.

After learning the lecture about the Native Americans, it was disappointing to learning the way they are living their life since people came over and took their land. At this moment Native Americans suffer the most when its come to poverty. As Richard stated in the lecture, Native Americans has high rates of Domestic violence, sexual assault, death related to alcoholism, unemployment rate, and high school drop out rate. They live in their own reservation without any resources from the U.S
Watching the videos of the reservation in South Dakota basically shows how these Native Americans live their rough life. Most of them live in a messed up, no spaced trailers, surrounded by flat land, in the middle of nowhere. They are so poor that they can't afford a reliable vehicle that will not shut down on them, like the one guy who was pushing his car as if it was an everyday thing. It made me upset when they were interviewing the old drunk lady who said she wanted to die because one of her family members is dead. Since these people are so depress and vulnerable, they feel like they have no other option but to end their life. Because of us stealing their land and killing them makes them feel that way.

The two videos that did impacted me was the ones about the American soldiers harassing civilians in Iraq. It was really disappointing to watch idiots who represent our country tormenting people or causing a vehicle roll off the road. Instead of doing their job, they're going around destroying people's cars because they are our enemy. Sometimes in the news they would talk about American soldiers being charged of man slaughtering a civilian or killing them but then again some people don't see nothing wrong with that since the victim is the enemy. Actions like these makes Americans look bad. It makes the people we are fighting against hate us even more than what they already do. There were other videos where they talked about bombings in Iraq and how it killed many innocent people and most of the victims were civilians and they were showing no sympathy while telling the story.
Finally I think the videos that were shown in class are example or evidence to support what Richard was talking about. Some of them were frightening, some were quite upsetting to watch. This particular lecture was maybe the best since everything was based on videos throughout the whole class.

All the videos that Richard showed us in class were not only interesting but some of them were a little frightening for me. The video about “Jihad” gave me goosebumps and the theme song was making it worse. That video was showing a time-line of all the bombings that occur in the countries that are basically allied with the U.S. I think it kind of makes sense that they are all linked together. The video about the parents training their kids to practice the religion and fight was disturbing. I feel like they were being brainwashed. Since they are young kids they are easily influence by whatever is taught to them. The videos that surprised me the most was the one from McCain and Sarah Palin saying outrageous things-both perfect example of “Christian Invaders”.

It was a very interesting lecture about the “Christian Invaders”. This lecture was the only one where I actually paid fully attention. It was quiet shocking about the things Richards was talking about. It made me think differently about many things. What caught my attention was about the greed for oil and how that is the reason why we are in war. I didn't realize oil was more valuable than any other resources. People treat it like gold. When we started the war with Iraq I always thought it was more than just terrorism and that’s why I'm not favored by it. So from watching the videos makes me deplore even more about the war.

Overall I do not feel uncomfortable when people are speaking another language because I am one those people who does speaks more than just English. I believe that people shouldn't get uncomfortable because a language is part of someones culture. I would always speak my second language even if people will get upset or uncomfortable because its part of who I am.
