World In Conversation : War Through the Ages -- 001 blog

First of all, I got interested in this video just by seeing the title; I think this fast overview of the all the wars that have happened in the world are a good example. I thought it was going to be differently, but overall it was intense for the five minutes it lasted. Starting watching the video it was getting slow and not much happening. The wars seemed to happen only in Europe and the Middle East. The video caught me waiting, and focus for more and more, it had its calm states and in times there were many wars happening at the same time. The explosion then started moving to Asia specifically Japan. Then to China, Vietnam and continuing with Mexico, then the explosions run to South America. One thing I noticed was that the wars started in North and South America after Europe and Africa and Asia. At the end of the 16th century the intensity of the wars started to happen and it seemed that it was going to get bigger. Is weird to being seeing all the first wars that occurred in the first ages, and imagining which conflicts started all this first wars all around the world. Thinking about all those wars that happened and how later one war who started in one continent was followed by other war and later another one. I also see that in Italy the wars keep happening. Most of the wars that occur in the 17th century were in the Northern Europe and at the end of the century a war occurs in Canada. In the 18th century wars start to occur in the Caribbean and in Canada. This is so amazing because even though they already sat history these events already happened, for me it feels good to know in this very small amount of time how all the wars occurred. At the beginning of the 19th century is starting to get scary and it gets tense because wars happen without stopping and it seems that more and more are going to happen. In this same century is where the first wars occurred in the United States. At the ending of the 19th century wars are happening all over the world, in the beginning of the 20th century a big explosion is made by surrounded wars in Europe, I think it was the WWI that is happening. Following this, in this same century, Europe was in chaos, because of the WWII and the Vietnam wars together with a war in Cuba. The 21st century started with wars in the Middle East and we don’t know what will be continuing.

World In Conversation : Transgendered Complications

From the beginning of this article I could understand his position since I have been learning about since you start to feeling and observing how your body changes and how you feel as when perceiving the world around you, you can tell if something seems different or you feel certain way toward things. Dr. Devoureau explained that he has been male his entire life and that he knew it since he was a child. The article explains how he has made changes in his social security, driver’s license, and birth certificate I think this is an example with more than prove that he is a male completely and he is living being a male. I think it was wrong that he was fired because he did not answer the question about if he had any surgery or not. The Urban Treatment Center was discriminating him because the issue dialed with his gender and at the moment they knew he was transgender they fired him. He made a complaint to the state’s Division on Civil Rights, and they answer that Dr. Devoureau was not related in any way to, any discriminatory intention. The case of Dr. Devoureau was the first case in the Unites States which was about employment and taken to question of a transgender person’s sex. In 2006 the state of New Jersey added gender identity or expression to the list of criteria for job discrimination. New Jersey is one of 12 states that prohibit discrimination based on transgender status. I think is amazing how with the situation that happened to the man he went to complain and with this complains some things changed in the state of New Jersey. After his desire to make a change and not wanting other people to be in the same position he was, he did not receive his job back and at the same time he might experience more situation in which people will give him more hard times or bringing his identity to the open and ask him about it. It was a decision that he has made to conserve his identity and for him is not necessary to talk about it.

World In Conversation : Women and War

. The women don’t want their children to grow up and continue war and being angry and hate those who killed their families. She talks about fear, fear of dying, but most fear of losing their loved ones. I can relate to this because I would dye in spirit if someone I love dies. The examples she gave about quotes that women have said, the one about the feeling of dying many times in one day, is intense I would think that this women has become a stronger women and all people who experience war and survive are from one way stronger and more alive. Women have been giving all they have left to keep life going and create a little piece from where there is none to maintain life keep growing. With women are the ones who keep life alive and push children to be better and are the ones who can avoid war and maintain peace.

From the words she said I started imagining as one of my dreams in which I just know is a dream and move crazily to wake up. I have had dreams with fear since I was a child so I know how I feel; I just try to get out of them by make myself wake up. I understand her when she said she went back praying thanking God that the explosion did not happen in her house to her family. She knows what is happening, she is used to hear and sees the explosions from the missiles, the only concern she has now is that she is still alive and her family too. As she talk and told the story I imagine every word she said, she gave life to those words which explained everything she said. In this video I understood the point she wanted to let out. She lived inside of war, in an environment where war was almost as natural and normal living there. She wants us to know that war is one thing and us as we don’t experience war or are not in the position those people are, should understand that war is not only war, deaths, sadness, hopelessness, but promote peace so life can continue its growth.

World In Conversation : So what your take on those "inequality classes"?

Poverty has been in this world always even if families’ incomes grow and they become a little wealthier others may begin living in a low income so this is not going to end. I wish nobody lived in poverty and had a decent live living without need for money, to live in a level in which they can have an education, have health benefits, and support their lives. At the same time this is the way it has to be, there has to be rich and poor, there has to be people in power and in this way they have to deal in any way to do whatever they want to do in order to win positions and have more power so they don’t care about helping poor people but in any way accomplish their propositions. Is not fair but is true, it has not been different before, it was worst in the past, it has been around for ages, it will not change in one night as to be the opposite, in the big picture, inequality classes will be kept for power.

I think that in this world there is wealthy and poverty because is just the way it has been for centuries. There is a wealthy person who move even higher but with poor people is harder to move even one level, as in competition everyone wants to get rich. The level of wealth is going to be always different because even if some families consider themselves wealthy in the region or area they live they might not be rich to other people who are wealthier than them living in other areas. It depends in the area in which people live and what they consider wealthy and to what amount of opportunity they have.

Poverty exists in every country all around the world. There are always bad politician who want to gain but don’t want to lose so they do whatever they have to do to move to the top and don’t care about the people who are hurting because of the increases of taxes people who need more resources. They move up to a higher position being corrupted. Corruption exists everywhere from a way or other but politicians do their dirty jobs in order to obtain what they want. When you are in this level they are more open and do work dirty. If is not corruption they work in a way of doing what is best for them and not beneficiated for society so in different ways they work to obtain what they want and with time as they are busy doing their business they don’t do anything about the people who needs help to or find a way so they can succeed and decrease poverty.

World In Conversation : Religion in the future?

I founded this article very interesting since I did not think and heard of religion in this way before. To what direction religion was going to move in the future and how society was going to react to it in the future. After I saw the countries the article mentioned about I thought they were going to mention my country but they did not. I really did not thought about it but in my country this is changing too, the leading religion is decreasing because more people don’t believe anymore and they just do whatever they want. I have thought of religion and what it means to me and how should I keep going with the believes my family and my community have inculcate in me, but as I am here I have thought of what should I believe and all the questions I have towards religion. One thing I know is that the latest time I was very spiritually and there is where I notice that I somehow am like a new person when I am with my parents close to my family in church. Somehow the spirit I and peace I feel whenever I need help I know that the faith of my religion makes me feel safe and secure again, the words of my parents, grandparents, church, Jesus, and God make me feel safe. I think that the topic of the article was something that somehow soon or late was going to happen not only in those countries but move to other too. I can say that my predictions are that religions may stay or grow in some countries but I think is more believable to think that they will decrease. Generations are changing some of them are not growing and developing with the same cultures, believes, and environments theirs parents and grandparents grew up. I think now is harder for parents to maintain their children assisting church and be involved in church, and religious activities. This religion topic it can controversial because society has all kind of point of views toward it, for example, can you survive and have a life you want to have involved committed to a religion or go alone and build your own beliefs. My point of view is that sometimes society who used to be committed to a religion still violated it and then want to make up to it or just forget about it and live freely. Other times we feel that we can not live our lives on our own and we need to commit to a religion so it can be easier to survive and will take us to a promise heaven.

World In Conversation : M.'s Story

At the beginning of the letter I was getting eager to know more about the story and what his story was; he started when he was young and this really made me think of the dreams I had when I was young and how I wish I was in that age, when we were innocents. Then he explains that today he lives with rapists, thieves, and murders and wants to be a good man, no longer with his dreams when he was a young boy. We can analyze this and reflect that he was a boy before and now he lives surrounded by these people, I said there is a gap in between his life and that is what he has not live out as when he was young because this part of his life is the one he only remembers as clean and freely from any conscious thought about life and actions that happened after the murder. It got me sad, as he said this; he wants to have a family and kids. He mentioned the purpose of why he writes, he wants to give a glimpse to the people outside and make them see the other side of being in prison as people doesn’t expect it exists. I understand him that he doesn’t want pity or consideration because of the act he did to be in prison. He thinks that by reading his story maybe would inspire people and make them work with kids so they don’t go the same way he chose for his life. He wants his words, his story to cause change for the better of other people. I think this man is on the position he should be because of this experience and by being in prison and he wants no pity on him because he know what he did and he understands what he did and he still feels guilty but at the same time, he would like to be a husband and have kids. This letter was the story that Sam told us today in class so I was more than eager to know how the story was and knowing more than this man. One thing made me think a lot about this man is when he said that if they ask him to be killed and give bring back the death men to his family, he would not hesitate to accept. My insight for this letter is that this is his story and how the event happened. How wrongly he did, now is too late to do something about it and this is definitely an example for us to see what to do in a situation similar as when we don’t do what we know is right because we are scared and something that is not letting us do the right thing can be difficult but we can do it.

World In Conversation : Lighting Our Way

I have thought of places in the world when the weather is different and how different can be living in different zones of the planes. In my earth class I started thinking how would be to move to a different location in the world and stay there for time and then move to another place. I just wondered what it would be to live in different places with different times how it can mess with the self of living. I guess that like we live in our time zone and get used to it, society in other places get used to it too. But this example from this video gave me the sense when we are in our winter time but worst. I mean in winter times is depressing with snow and low temperatures. The only thing a person wants to do is stay in bed and takes some hot chocolate. Sometimes the depression mode gets oneself and this is not a very healthy state of being. This also brings colds, our immune is more vulnerable for sickness for a period of time, sometimes we tend to eat more, and we don’t have the same energy to exercise. Imagining living in Helsinki in which the day has less time with light and yes living in darkness most of the season. Society has to expose to this weather naturally, I wonder how life is for kids in schools. In the video it shows how people live a normal life in the darkness. People living in Helsinki have to adapt to the way of living in there, one example I give is taking an iced swimming, I would not be able to do that at all. They can have the freedom to move to other place during this time of the year but they don’t do it as people in other places can move to other places to avoid the weather of a period time of the year but most of them don’t do it either. It shows that this is the way of living and they have to live it like it is, even with depressions and disorders, lights, and other conditions. It is difficult to accept this ways of living and I can say it is because people have to experience all kind of natural conditions as the latitude of the position of the world in which they live. In State College I have experience the worst, lowest temperature in my entire life. I do hate it sometimes, I wish I could just move and go back when winter is gone but it can not be. This is why I know that I will not spend my whole life in State College and live there for ever. Helsinki is beautiful in general and more in summer time which is more enjoying. I saw this video as an example of how there are places with this circumstances and how people live and accept or have to deal with its conditions and understand that in every place in the world to live has something that one has to accept or be committed to in order to survive.

World In Conversation : Rethinking Education

First of all I was amazed by the production of the video from the beginning and I would love to see how they made it. I never saw something like that before I thought it was good. And the narrator did a good job too. They are saying that there are two reasons for how education is influenced in the Unites States and how these two factors interact with each other. Economic and Cultural are the two factors and are the base for our educational system since it was constructed. How we educate our children in economical and cultural ways this question of how children are educated is a question that many countries are trying to answer so we can understand where education is going with time in the future. I don’t think that trying to understand how children are educating today is nothing the same as the past. In the past they used to go do well in school, work hard, get a college degree and get a job. Now the idea conformity, multidirectional, and plasticity are interacting to either change the ways in which people are acting and taking other paths or it takes one person in the family to stand up and take another way total different where the culture that was followed starts to break and start another way. Time changes and the customs were not going to be followed always. One thing that definitely has changed is technology. Technology has to do with the changes in how the education is structured. It was believed there were two groups of people smart and non-smart and I don’t believe in this at all. I believe that all students are smart they just have different level of learning. The way in which they make them take medications which is taking something away from them, they are many examples of how they can get distracted. One think that also strike me was about how we students are separated depending on age. This factor has to deal a lot in the development of education. Being in a school year with kids which are almost one year younger or older than you (children who are born on September and before this month have to stay until the other school year) can influence a great deal of learning. One outcome of this age separation and gender is the results of the exams which tell the rated position they should be in. Overall this educational system has a lot to say and many factors that deal with how children are educated and changing the way they learn. This is something they cannot control but has to happen.

World In Conversation : Social Structure Shapes Free Will

It said that because of the history of the Himalayas the number of women decreases and now there is less man who can not find a woman to get marry so this kind of events happened because they have to happen. I believe that things have to be arranged or people themselves find other ways to arrange their lives because of the outcomes of how the social issues bring circumstances to their lives. There are thing that people living in this situation can not control they have to happen and if they like it, it stays and continue to happen and they later see it as a culture. With the future different issues and the same population changes the rules or norms in the families. This event will see immoral in some cultures but it happens and with time it gets acceptable. I also believe that if I live in this place something related might happen to me or even other kinds of events might happen. This is just some ways people have to adapt in order to find happiness in the place they live in.

I have seen this but in the opposite way, a man having many women and today this opposite idea feels different. The event that I saw was here in the United States it was in Pennsylvania, Utah or Ohio I really can’t recall where but maybe because I have seen or heard situations in these states too. It was a situation in which a man had two to three women and they were sisters. But they had many children and it was almost the same routine like the video. In my Anthropology class I learned about polygamy but it was mostly men. A woman having three men and being brothers is circumstances which I would see my self very far away from do it. It is very interesting seeing the different view in this video showing how they said that if the woman is smart she can have all men the same night I can not even imagine how she can have more than one man around. I was amazed with this; it reminds me of the relationship where a person has a husband or wife and a lover at the same time. But I can also see from where this people come from with these events. This is seen because in china, Himalayas, U.S. or any other country where polygamy happens is the consequences of a situation in the population.

World In Conversation : The not-so-invisible structure that shapes us

What I understood from the article is that Americans are comfortable staying in the United States without traveling. Yet they are afraid of traveling to countries or places in which war or political problems and dealing with security. I did not know that only 30% of citizens in the U.S. have passports buy it makes sense now because mostly Americans don’t have the need or are not able to leave the country. I would guess that mostly what American thinks is they don’t need to travel; they don’t feel that they want to. This is also an issue why traveling is low in the U.S. Another reason I saw was that citizens are committed to their career and sometimes taking time for a vacation can be unacceptable. I believe American do travel but is mostly inside the Unites States and Canada or Mexico like the article said. What I think is that U.S. has a variety of places that can give people a sense of comfort without leaving the country. I know there is an amount of unique places all around the world but the Unites States does too. The article mentioned beautiful beaches, canyons, deserts, lakes, mountains, and a big amount of places where you can find all cultures and people. Being in the Unites States is like being all around the world in just one place, and yes people still travel and some of them don’t now the whole variety places that they can travel first here in the US. One big thing on the news is what causes people not wanting to travel or not seemed interested in going outside of their safe country and not knowing what might happen seeing all the bad news that the media provides. One example can be when college students finish with their careers and start working, later they want to take a vacation and since they are busy they prefer to take it close to home and family. I would like to know how the rates of traveling where before 9/11 because of wars happening in some many countries people don’t want to travel and exposure to any danger. I would say yes, people are free to travel. All Americans are free to travel, but the truth is, the reality is that they don’t travel because they are not free completely. There is always some strings that we can not control which don’t let us be free to travel.

World In Conversation : Conformity Rules the Day

Conformity is the first choice we have when in the situation to comply with society and not feel left out. We are made to conform in social situations. We would act the same in any situation that would prove conformity. This video made laugh because is funny how the guy that does not know what is happening acts following the others. I can see that one of them are still asking himself if it is a game or what is wrong but he keeps following without asking. I believe the victims will keep following until the end without stopping or asking anything. I definitely believe every value, ability and interest in our life we have developed because of some influences that we have copied. It is just so natural how in the video the guy that was turning slowly can shows us that we have done the same in other occasion about a situation and we might not even notice but is true. It is totally true that we will follow other when there are more three people, and more if we are feeling insecure. We follow this conformity everyday with the clothes we wear, the word we chose to say, face expressions, acts on events or situations, choices of music or anything, and manners. All of our lives are based on conformity, from our parents, friends, and the environment in which we live on. In the video is the pressure that does not let us go with our own leading. It is difficult if there are more people that go together and you against them, the nature is we definitely follow them or seem not sure of our own answer because we don’t feel secure and we don’t want to be left out or we are not confident enough. We might know that we are not right and that we are doing something wrong but we can not act on our own is just can’t be. Conformity is experience since childhood it is seen since we are in kindergarten when playing and other kids are playing or doing something in order to be with them and continuing to be around them without even knowing. All through growing up and more in high school when students are getting involved in sports, clubs, and group gathering, when groups start to form with different kinds of activities and they keep involving in groups until college and society. Society keeps influencing all their life time.

World In Conversation : Americans Gone Wild!

I think it is unnecessary in how the authorities are handling this situation. I understand the laws and how it has to work with somebody who has a weapon on a secure place, and more if it is a school property, but how they react and treat this child. A five year old, is ridiculous. The child was not going to do any act on anybody; I believe he took the object just as a toy as he saw it. He said he founded in his stepfather car, he might take it as a toy; he is too young to know circumstances. If they thought the child was going to do an attack they should just take the gun away and they would be sure that that nothing was going to happen because the child did not posses the gun anymore but they did made a big deal about after it. Is crazy that after they took the gun from him they did a fire alarm and called the police and took the child as a suspect, he is just five years old. I believe the child had nothing to do with the gun but something might be behind where did he got it. The child had a gun, which belong to his stepfather. Al the business talking was going to be dialed with his stepfather or mother who was responsible for the child and his actions. The police should go directly to the parents and investigate where the child had the gun because they were the only responsible for the security of the child and the gun and they should take more responsibility and secure the weapon. They had to suspend the child; close the school, alert all families and the investigation will take months; it is not a terror attack that might happen again. I understand that they had to investigate and discover what exactly and how happened that the child got the gun but the police made it bigger than it should be. I was thinking this event to the child will affect him throughout his growing until his present in his life. I say it because of the small community he lives, if he continues to live there. He is only five year old; I believe this is not necessary for his life at least what can the authorities do is help the child and make him secure in the place he is living not treat him like an suspect. Like I said this is his parents or the responsible for the gun. They should be the ones to be questioned and get to a solution. The child is only five and he is the victim he should have some kind special caring making sure he is not exposure to some kind of violence because if the responsible was not cautions enough to secure the gun, what else can they exposure to the child development.

World In Conversation : Letter from an Inmate

This is the first time I am reading a letter or a point of view from someone in prison. I am amazed; I always wanted to hear points of view from other perspectives about what is like leaving inside without the opportunities of doing things people outside can. Is true we that have still opportunities we don’t value. Do we need to mega event, terrible events happening in our lives so we can see what really matters and start taking the most out of every moment in our lives and don’t take anything for granted? He first mentions, the “lifer” that when he was younger, so he is showing that he realized so after the reason he was in prison he still have the mind to be able to see the world from a better perspective. I thought it might be because of the murder he committed that he still was not able to see what really life meant for him or his fellow beings until that point. I believe that he was still blind to that moment when he realized how life really would make some sense inside and outside of jail and how important was. He made me think of when there is something you discover about life that you feel you already knew it existed it was just hidden with something and until several situations help you see the main and important message that life wants to give you. It is amazing how I am getting a story of this man who is in jail and has a totally different daily routine than I and I imagine how he went through from understanding the nature of things happening and is living more vividly now than a lot of people who are not in prison. When Sam mentioned that we were going to be able to read some letters from people in prison, I could not wait to read what they had to say. I tried to think what will they be saying being in prison and not having the same opportunity we have being outside of prison. I feel as if he let me see from his writing and let me know a sense of his experience being in prison but from a different perspective. I was eager to see what these people were feeling and what their lives were being in prison without the same opportunities as someone who is living outside. The fact that he said that he saw the two men holding each other if they hate it each other reminded me of small situations which I have seen in my life. The difference was that it was happening in prison when prisoners have not the same environment. This is what is so amazing how in this shut down place the same things can happened and more vividly at different and more naturally. I can guess that we can see this situation of compassion more happening inside of prison than outside because over there life is more appreciated.
