Big Hollywood : How to Stop Worrying About 'Ants on the Crucifix' and Ignore Second Rate Art

fgdesign, Don't you think dunking Obama's statuate in dung would be as offensive and idiotic as covering a religious symbol in it? You can justify it by saying that Obama's father was African and so is the elephant dung tradition but I will still say that it is idiotic and crass and not art regardless what the object is. If people think that sticking a religious OR ANY OBJECT in urinie is not only offensive but loudly juvenile and idiotic, doesn't mean that that they don't see the value of real art. Yet, people who elevate thier talentless selves by shock value alone have no understanding of it. Learn to debate with respect, because you talk exactly how the psuedo-artists discussed here 'create' -as a brat. If you decide to join the adults table and be respectful you may even learn something. I understand how much you value doo-doo as an art form, but you don't have to drag everything into it. Or at least, you don't have to attack people personally when they don't have an appreciation for the crap (literally) that you so passionately defend.

fddesign, Elephant doo-doo doesn't bother me a bit nor your condesending attitude toward people here. As a garden variety indoctrinated snob, you assume that all politically conservaitve people have inferrior understanding and appreciation of art. You lost your credibility at hello. I still don't understand what you are defedning here? You seem to agree that the ants on the Crucifix is known only because of what you claim right did to it. Isn't that my point? If you can't see the irony of 'sticking to the man' than there is not much hope that reeading any article on any blog will help you.

Individualist. I agree, the ananlogy of 'father and son' is more illustrative than precise. But I think left is more of a possessive mother than a controlling father.

Great article, Mark. I was discouraged to see this film at Toronto Film Festival by pretty much everybody. The consesus was that the only reason this piece of garbage was selected was because of Redford's celebrity status.

AlistZ, I did not realize that your point was more rethorical. Thanks for clarifying it. I think there were not enough 'Big Hollywoods' to point those incidents at a time But I absloutely agree. Eliphas Levi can be considered both a mystic and occultist, I think he is more on a side of disciplined mysticisn because a lot of what he says is supported by detailed cultural research and cross reference. He was a man of enourmous erudition. Even if one does agree with his mystical teachings, his observations, such as the one referenced, are profound. Finally, it's not a bother to reply to comments but a great plaesure for me. I am very flattered that intellegent people read my posts and comment and we have this opporunity to argue, calrify and refine these points. Thanks for reading the post.

I would not have more positive reaction even if he appeared as Marlon Brando. I have met some celebrities who in real life looked much less attractive or interesting than thier on screen persona but I never had any reaction similar to that I had with Woody Allen. As I said it was disappointing for me to think that but that what crossed my mind. I don't think in those terms, he does and that's why, regrettably, the first thought that came to my mind was about his looks and sexuality. I really appreciate you following on my comment, so I could clarify my point. It had nothing to do with age or looks (I am gonna get there too, sooner or later) but everything to do with Woody Allen and him turning his looks and age into a brand and ridiculing people who don't agree with him. Another example "Whatever Works" with Larry David ( the guy who thinks that urinating on the image of Christ is funny). That's my point.

Its not the looks, filmklassik, I never make fun of people based on their looks. It's the way he branded his not particularly attractive look. You entirely missed the point of what I was saying. It's him making fun of everything under the sun that caused my reaction. There was no smirk either, I was disappointed in my own reaction. Don't worry about meeting me, I will treat you with utmost respect, unless just like Woody Allen you make cheap points by putting Wonder Bread and mayo on the Crucifx like in "Hanna and her Sisters" ( otherwise a great movie). If you did then I will make fun of you too, not based on your looks, but your actions.

AlistZ, So if somehting happens in the past and a similar thing happens in the present one should not talk about it? I just want to understand your logic. The same pertains to O'Donnel and Eliphas Levi comment. Just because she made a statement about witchcraft we cannot talk about mystics for a week? Is there is a specific timing in making historic references that I am not aware of?

I see your point, Hucbald. I agree that the Tea Party and the French Revolution are not similar in the way they were executed. Yet, what started both movements was the reaction to the excesses of the ruling class and their disregard of the people. Both were genuine people's movements but the French thing went really wrong and betrayed its founding principle. I think what the Marxists adopted from the French Revolution was not the people's revolt against the intrusive ruling class but the way that the real people's movement can by hijacked and turned againstthe same people. That is not going to happen to The Party, but then again we thought we could never have a Marxist President in America.
