If a cop can't tell you what law you are breaking I see no reason why the cop shouldn't be challenged. Just like when the cop told one of the arrestees to "shut up". That isn't a law and the cop should be challenged on it. I respect the hell out of our police forces across the nation and try to defend their difficult jobs as much as possible but in this case I feel they overstepped their bounds. Even though this doesn't seem like a big deal it's the slippery slope. What are you going to do when a disaster of some sort hits your area (Katrina or recent tornadoes we've seen) and by order of the governor, all firearms are to be confiscated? What will you do when a nice young national guardsman comes to your house and politely asks to retrieve your weapons, leaving your family defenseless?
