The fact that @htc hasn't said anything regarding the unlocked Hero's update is unsettling to say the least. At that point, you'll just follow the on-screen instructions. If not, then you'll want to head into the Settings option, go down to 'About Phone', and then look for 'System Update'. if it's not there (because I'm going off my HTC Hero, and there are other menu changes in the Eris, so it could be different), then it could be under 'Security'. I haven't had the device lock up on me yet, thankfully, and I'm sorry you're having that situation. Does it happen only when you are trying to text message someone? If it keeps happening, perhaps you should try pulling the battery from the phone while it is still turned on. This is a hard reset, and it usually helps.
