I like it but it looks like a pain in the ass to wear. If you put your arms down, I can just see the sides sagging enough to slip and show too much boobie. If I were wearing it I'd be doing chicken arms the whole time just afraid of that happening.

I'm afraid of what next year is going to look like. I got engaged and won a big professional prize in 2012, next year is guaranteed to suck. Because I believe everything evens out and you never get something hugely good without something bad to offset it. I don't logically believe this is true, but I am superstitious so I kind of do.

My fiance was kind of grumbly when I woke him up that night. He's a cranky sleeper. I stood over him and lectured him, "You will regret it if you don't come with me. This is why we moved here, to see history that will never happen in Alabama in our lifetimes." And that got him moving. I'm willing to bet Texas gets gay marriage before Alabama. Alabama will get it right about the time Mississippi rescinds open-carry laws for guns.

So the first day of gay marriage in Maine was cold. My fiance fell asleep on the couch and I woke him up at 11pm Friday to walk down to City Hall. We stood outside for almost an hour and a half waiting for the first couple (probably the first couple in the state) to get their paperwork done, get married and emerge into the crowd. They were two guys who had just strolled up to get in line at about 9:30pm. They weren't expecting to be first and were kind of startled at the number of reporters who descended on them but they were game. And so cute! They'd brought their grown daughters, so it was a whole family thing. I'm told the scene inside City Hall was very festive. People handed out cupcakes and boutonnieres and a jazz band played for free. There were 300 people outside in the cold. Most of the people outside, including us, didn't know anyone getting married, they just wanted to offer their support. It was really very moving, once you thought about it. I mostly went just to witness history in the making, and be around happy people, but once the first couple came down the steps, I think it hit some of us who aren't actually involved that this was just the definition of real, lasting, enduring love. And now it was legal in the eyes of the state. I admit, a few happy tears were shed.

I went into one once looking for some cake decorating thingy. I left almost in tears after half an hour because I couldn't f*cking find my way back out. That place is cavernous and scary, and all the crucifixes and Bible verse signs are right up front where you can't miss them.

He actually told us he was largely indifferent on the subject of abortion rights until the protesters came along. He said they've become increasingly rude and have screamed at the women going in, which pissed him off so much he felt compelled to stand up for the women at the clinic.

Oh yeah, we wrote about this. The city is considering buffer zones to separate the protesters from the people who go into the clinic. The protesters are saying they'll respond with bigger, more gory signs. (sigh) This guy Mike wants to get in the protesters faces. He's already made sarcastic signs to hold in their faces that call them loud idiots. I've never met him but he seems a good sort.

Went to a new doctor under a new health plan today. Got a pelvic exam, flu shot, tetanus shot, whooping cough shot, blood drawn and a general wellness exam in under an hour, including the 5 minutes of waiting for the nurse to call me into the exam room. I am filled with wonder at this doctor's efficiency, and also with a lot of holes from the needles. In other good news, same-sex marriage will be legal in Maine at one minute past midnight tonight. I work a block away from city hall; I might go watch the crowds of people getting married. It will be so festive!

Horrible head cold=bad. Was sent home by boss=not so bad (even if he prefaced it with "you look terrible"). Short last day til after Christmas=not bad at all.
