Don't Get Any Ideas : 16: Fear of Men - Don\'t Get Any Ideas

I agree. Most people prefer problems, solutions, explanations and stories that are simple, with premises and logic we readily understand. We don't grasp nuance well when our emotions are engaged. That's one reason progress on complex issues is slow and recursive.

Don't Get Any Ideas : 1: Breakfast

Interesting observations. I grew up visiting the family farm / ranch and having bacon and eggs with Grandpa before keeping him company on his morning rounds. Nowadays it's usually granola and fruit. Looking forward to seeing where this goes, Sylvia. Appropriate topic for a first strip.

Sunset Grill : Sunset Grill

No worries at this end, Kat. Look out for yourself and family, wrest some form of balance from the universe. The Grill will still be there when you can spare the resources and I for one will hail its return, no matter the wait. Sorry things are so stressed for you right now; been there, will likely go back again and buy another damn t-shirt. Take care and seeya round!

Think Before You Think : Think Before You Think - A Mind-Reading Webcomic

It's been a great ride. Looking back, it puts me in mind of the short-lived series "The Girl with Something Extra", waaay back in '74, and the more recent manga "Mousou Telepathy". Both those are also about characters who are (seemingly) unique in their abilities and are just trying to deal with everyday life. It is a bit sad to have to say goodbye to the cast of TBYT. As someone else once said: "Feel a bit sad if you like. We never like to see things end. But ending isn't all of it." Many thanks, Sylvia.

Nice to see Becky discomfited by Jules; doesn't happen often. And in the background, it looks like Mandi and Rick have gotten back together, or are at least on better terms than they were.

Brian has been unavoidably looking in all kinds of people's heads for most of his life, so hormone-fueled adolescent fantasies are unlikely (by themselves) to shock him. Though it's true he finds it different when such fantasizing is about someone he cares about.

It's fascinating to watch Becky cope with this breakup. While we don't know for sure, it seems the first time she's had to deal with these kinds of consequences. She actually seems to be coping (so far) pretty well, though she probably doesn't think so herself. She isn't taking refuge in substance abuse, pushing her friends away or obsessing over her ex. Instead she's just plugging along, day by day, with at least some of her old snarkiness still intact. I see her coming through this stronger and a little bit wiser.

I'd think that it is. She turned away at least two kids with serious injuries that Brian knows of; their parents could make things very nasty for the school (maybe even the entire district). At the very least, she'd find getting a new job very difficult. Heck, even if she manages to keep her current job, being outed as incompetent and callous on social media could impact her life significantly. Of course all that assumes other people (law enforcement, city and school district officials and lawyers, parents) are motivated enough to act. But if she really is just a symptom of a school that's so broken, then Brian's last line has some truth to it.

Ah, takes me back to when the family still ran our own cattle on our ranch. Now we just lease the grazing land to other people. I remember early-morning drives with my grandfather, and his cursing when we found cows and calves wandering in the orchards or along the county road because someone had left a gate open...

Heartening to see that Burton isn't dismissive of what Brian has to say. At the same time, if injured kids feel that the new counselor is better at first aid and more sympathetic than the nurse, the situation is critical. Burton could find himself and his school in a very messy, expensive lawsuit if he doesn't address the situation immediately.

I agree, which makes me curious about Guy-with-the-hair's motives. Displaced frustration and self-esteem issues, like Bernard? Given that such people almost never see themselves in the wrong, I imagine Guy pictures himself as being clearly smarter and cooler than anyone else in his school, certainly too hip and fearless to be concerned about any mere teacher or administrator. It would be interesting to see how that smugness fares against Brian's talent and insight.

So there have been at least a few positive changes since we last saw Brian's new workplace... Bernard still has a way to go, but any distance from his previous sadism is progress. Ideally that worse than useless school nurse is now looking for a new job; I wish her all the luck she deserves.

And that's another reason to love Murdoch: he can realize when he makes a mistake, admit it and does what he can to make up for it. He's not a patronizing type, as Lena has noted: he doesn't talk down to people, whether he's reassuring Daphne or having Nash's arm broken. I love how he doesn't sugarcoat this conversation either: he makes it clear she did a stupid thing and he doesn't approve. But there are far more brutal teachers in Lowtown, as I hope even Julia is coming to appreciate.

It belatedly occurred to me that Murdoch (along with Alain and Lena) is from St. Louis, which would add another layer to his response to Daphne's careless words. Bad as Lowtown in Kieselburg is, it's several steps removed from what we've learned about St. Louis.
