i love the picture of the contractors staring at the decking. that's exactly what i look like any time i try a little DIY. the difference is that I keep that confused expression during the whole project ;) i just adore seeing that stage of the genius that produced such an amazing house!

HGTV Green Home : Call for Questions

i too am considering concrete counter tops! i love the modern look and how it can really highlight vibrant colors. plus they are basically scratch and stain proof! here is what i have learned so far about concrete countertops. 1. in order for the counter to actually be eco-friendly, you need to use fly ash and a non-petroleum based sealer. most concrete produced is from portland cement, and it consumes more energy and pollutes more than any other industry including steel and plastics. It contributes 5-8% of all greenhouse gases just by itself. Fly ash is a waste product of a coal combustion plant. Fly ash cement has greater corrosion resistance, substantially higher fire resistance (up to 2400° F), greater strength and less permeability. 2. concrete counter tops are extremely durable but it depends upon the sealer you put on top. concrete must be properly sealed in order to resist stains or damage and they recommend "waxing" the counter regularly to protect the sealer. and they say cutting directly on the concrete will damage the sealer (not to mention your knives!). 3. if you're ambitious you can even get a DIY concrete counter top kit! haven't looked too much into these yet so im not sure if they use fly ash or not. sounds challenging but rewarding if it work out! i found alot of info on www.themoderngreen.com and www.concretecountertopinstitute.com hope this helps! i would love to hear about what you end up doing!

HGTV Green Home : Call for Questions

im so glad mary is heading out west to show us around the green home! i cannot wait to see all the gorgeous details! i have a couple questions about the green home 2011: 1. i am dying to see the kitchen and what green materials they use for the countertops. (im starting to do a little research into a green kitchen of my own and would love some inspiration) 2. i am curious about how they will inject the modern prairie/ f.l.wright style into the decorations. is it going to have a more mid-cent modern feel or be more contemporary like previous homes? 3. finally, in previous blogs they mentioned the yard will have synthetic grass. will there still be room for some home grown veggies? nothing beats fresh tomatoes picked in your own backyard. i would love to learn more about the landscaping and lot size.
