20s Money : What's Going On In The World?

I like what Ron Paul has to say as much as anyone...but I don't think he could ever get elected as President. I don't think he even believes that he could get elected! Being a perennial candidate gives him a perfect forum to get these wonderful conservative principles out in the public eye and discussed at length. However, shallow as it seems, he doesn't "look" or "sound" like the president. The American Idol electorate isn't going to elect somebody that reminds them of their crazy uncle! So, as much as I like what Paul has to say, I have to think more practically in terms of who can beat the smooth-talking campaign machine of Obama. When I look at the current field, Perry is the only one who fits the bill. He's an excellent campaigner, and while he's not my favorite politician I will take him over big O any day!

20s Money : Perspective From Argentina: Is The US Next?

Trend...definitely. I opened my local paper today and was amazed to see a mainstream adoption of this phenomenon. It's a "wire report" and ran in a bunch of papers... I read it in the Dallas Morning News. http://bit.ly/dBwwnV

20s Money : Armed Guards At Unemployment Offices: What It Means

I think a terrifying dose of humility is in store for many of the unemployed. Your older unemployed manager may have to realize he's not going to be a manager anymore. And the unemployed autoworker will have to realize that they're not an autoworker anymore. While it will take drastic changes in lifestyle, location, and a change in stature from a high-paid union worker or manager to a minimum wage associate at Wal-Mart that's the only functional alternative...you can't just sit around and wait for somebody to rescue you! At what point do Americans start immigrating to Asia...the new "Land of opportunity"?

20s Money : Inflation: Nothing To See Here...

Sheer idiocy. I watched a major network news broadcast last night where they were talking about social security not increasing, but not to worry because cost of living hasn't increased...the Cost of Living calculations don't include food and energy! They went on to interview all of these people saying how they were upset because food is more expensive, but their income is not increasing. I accept and agree that there is deflation at work in the market, but any attempt to stop it is just going to delay and exacerbate the problem! Endless inflation is not sustainable!

20s Money : Read This Before You Buy A House

Also in some markets, you can buy a house for what it costs to rent...after taxes and depending on how long/what shape the place is in after maintenance and upkeep. If this is the case it makes sense to buy! Even if you only break even on the sale, or possibly even lose a little, you stand to get all of your principle payments back and possibly some of the interest. If you think the housing market in your area is stabilized, as I do since Texas really didn't see the dips like lots of places, you can really compare the interest costs of a mortgage to rent, and consider the principle payments as some sort of long-term savings. Even if you're not getting a big return, you're saving on rent and forcing yourself to save cash that is accessible even if it's not liquid.

20s Money : What Are You Good At?

I was told once by a mentor that your twenties are the time in life not to find out what you want to do with your life, but rather to find out what you don't want to do.... Unless you're that weird kid that has known exactly what he wants to do since age 4, you generally don't have enough experience to make a "I want to do *this* for the rest of my life" decision, so the best thing to do is get out there and try a bunch of different things. You may find yourself doing something you don't like--but you can scratch that one off the list with confidence.

20s Money : Scanning The Headlines

"its not good policy for americans to lose their health insurance when they are unemployed, because thats when they need it the most. " Why is that? Are people sicker when they're unemployed? And last time I checked, under existing "Cobra" laws you can keep your insurance when you leave a job. Could a bigger problem be that people don't save enough money to support themselves in the situation where they lose a job? When I was unemployed for about 6 months a couple of years ago, I took out a high deductible "catastrophic" health plan. It was cheap and all I needed as I am generally healthy and an accident or surprise terrible diagnosis was the only real health risks I had. Note: I did not say "woe is me" and wait for the government to rescue me. I changed my lifestyle dramatically while I looked for a new job.

20s Money : Random Thoughts On The Economy & Markets

They've already thought of that problem...We're all going to be required to drive A+ graded Chevy Volts, then we will only use 2 gallons at $15/gal rather than 12 gallons at $2.5/gal. You're still only spending $30 for gas, right? Let's just hope my income doesn't lag too far behind inflation, or I might have trouble making the $1,000 lease payment on my Volt.

20s Money : Investing In A Difficult World

Fascinating. I think the inclusion of the unfunded liabilities goes to prove the point that government benefits will have to be reduced. Reduced....abolished...whatever it is, it's not going to be pretty if we hope to attain anything remotely resembling fiscal responsibility. If you spread out a tax burden of $318,000 over a working lifetime that would be bad enough. Consider that 40% of Americans don't pay any taxes and that number is even bigger for the "rich people" that pay taxes. While they may try and ruin us in the process, the Govt is not going to be able to tax themselves out of this hole. Favorite line: The programs [of the Federal Government] are classic Ponzi schemes that make Bernie Madoff look like Mother Teresa.

20s Money : Out Of Touch? Completely

Stephan (or Robert Gibbs, whoever you really are...) also believes we are in a recovery and that Elena Kagan is not a political activist. Michelle might be paying for "her" hotel room, but the other 69 rooms, plus the armored vehicles, plus the 100 man support team that follows around executive airlift aircraft, the meals, travel expenses and salaries of her "staff" (what does the first lady do again?), on and on and on is going to total in the hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars. I'm not saying every president and his family hasn't blown a bunch of money zooming around on expensive trips, but every president hasn't been leading in the midst of the (self-described) "worst financial disaster since the great depression".
