CGBlog.org :: An Unofficial Coast Guard Blog : The Arctic Mission, the Coast Guard's not alone

Does the Coast Guard realy need icebreakers for the north mission? While there might be a long term need for new icebreakers with in the CG, could they fill the immediate need for a presence with in the arctic? Could the CG buy a set of three or four LCAC hovercrafts from the Navy, position them in Purdhoe Bay or Barrow Alaska, where they could be housed in heated hangars and available for immediate search and rescue response or law enforcement patrols/security. The LCAC has been proven to be a reliable platform for the Navy/Marines, and it should be more than capable in stepping up and filling the Coast Guard's needs. After all why go through the ice, when you can float over it?
