GazetteOnline.com : The contingency -- Quarterback

Good grief. Is it really necessary to keep beating on Trey Stross? His catch in the 4th quarter of the Orange Bowl kept our drive alive. We went on to score another touchdown and put the game away for us. Finally, look at all the guy did for Iowa over the years. Iowa was lucky to have Trey Stross.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa's Binns arrested for drunken driving (with Ferentz statement)

I totally agree about the paperwork. On June 6, the Gazette's story on the Jewel Hampton arrest included paperwork from the arrest that listed his home address and driver's license number — most of the information needed to commit identity theft. To my mind, this is reckless journalism.

GazetteOnline.com : School board member criticizes Iowa City discussion on redistricting

Tuyet Dorau is a loose cannon. The city council represents the people of Iowa City and have every right to weigh in on the subject. Besides, after Dorau's comment about the district taking over the Clear Creek Amana district to acquire their new high school, she's about the last person with the credibility to be critical of others.

GazetteOnline.com : Who's best at rationing health care?

Sorry you've missed the point. Companies commonly refuse treatment to their CUSTOMERS for a variety of reasons. This isn't about people who get sick and then shop for a policy. Don't worry that insurance companies will be defrauded by these people, they stand roughly ZERO chance of being covered. But as far as your philosophical question goes: What differentiates health insurers from McDonalds? Health insurers are in the position to make life and death decisions. Putting aside the possibility of getting e coli from a Quarter Pounder, there's a huge difference between the two.

GazetteOnline.com : Extremist group calls for many governors' resignations, including Culver

How about a quick civics (and legal lesson) for all you 'patriots.' If you write a government official and express the opinion that said individual should resign his/her office, THAT is protected as free speech. Threatening to forcibly remove said office from office could qualify as a) terrorism b) treason c) any number of charges related to violence. We need to fiercely protect the right of free speech. If speech incites violence, then it needs to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Last I checked this is a democracy. So-called 'patriot' wingnuts think they're speaking for the 'real' America, but if this stupidity leads to violence, these nuts will see how much support they have from those of us that still believe in the democratic process.

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: Ferentz and percentages are always teammates

Sports Illustrated reported today that Ferentz is on ND's short list to replace Charlie Weis. To those of you who have a problem with Ferentz's coaching, that may be good news. Personally, I think it would be a disaster for the Iowa football program, but with the kind of grief he's been taking from some fans lately, I wouldn't blame him if he left. The good news is that Charlie Weis will be available — or maybe we can lure Rich Rodriquez away from Michigan. As Ferentz himself likes to say, we'll get what we deserve.

GazetteOnline.com : Hlas: A day when being great wasn't good enough

Who's this we? Sitting in front of a TV with a beer in your hand isn't 'we.' It would be nice if our 'fans' had the class, guts and talent that this coaching staff and team have displayed. Classless, absolutely classless.

If it weren't for this coaching staff, the Hawks wouldn't have been in the position to win the game in the first place. Your comments about Ferentz and O'Keefe not only are ignorant, they indicate that you have no idea why this team has been so competitive in the first place. Thank god the Iowa AD has more intelligence and class than some of our 'fans' — otherwise we might be saddled with a Weis, Dantonio, or Rodriquez. To hawkshop - if anything you saw from the coaching staff or players last night was unforgivable, you need to get things in perspective. If we had OSU on the 10 yard line we'd have them on the ropes. Having the Buckeyes mid-field is hardly having them on the ropes. Geez.

GazetteOnline.com : Electrolux closing Iowa plants, 850 jobs lost

Blaming unions for our loss of jobs to foreign competitors is pure nonsense. I should know, I lost a job that provided a livelihood that allowed me to take care of my family. If this makes me greedy, then I'm guilty as charged. Our life was hardly ostentatious. My job went to India and China that pay roughly one-fifth the salary of an American worker. Those wages are less than McDonald's pays its workers. Tell me, how Americans can possibly support families working jobs that pay roughly 3 dollars per hour? It wasn't so long ago that Americans were concerned that our neighbors prospered. It appears that some of these posters prefer to see their neighbors destitute while foreigners prosper. Sad.
