My dad used to have (probably still has!!) a collection of film canisters with sand from every beach he's visited, labeled with place and date. He likes to bring them home and examine them under the microscope. In fact, as he doesn't like to swim or be in the sun, I think he enjoys this more than any other aspect of going to the beach.
