SalisburyPost.com -- Your guide to Rowan, Cabarrus, Davie and Davidson counties, North Carolina : SalisburyPost.com - Area - No spanking? Corporal punishment ban on school board agenda

After three conferences at my child's school last year because of her behavior, she was removed and placed in a private school where she has turned her behavior around. She knows that she was moved from her friends at the old school because of her behavior. Her hide is so tough that paddling would be a waste of energy. She knows that the next stop will be a convent. We acknowledge that we HAD a problem child and placed her in a situation where she gets helps with her attitude and no longer distracts other children. Parents must realize that behavior problems are their problem and if not nipped in the bud will bear noxious fruit in the long run. Good thing my child is a girl. A son would not be sitting down yet.

A whole lot more hinnies need to be fired up in school. Spare the rod and spoil the child. I would never teach in a public school where corporal was not used. The behavior in some public schools is atrocious. Short of corporal punishment, take the parents of unruly students to court for negligent child rearing. That would make some parents beg for the return of corporal punishment. It is patently unfair for well trained students to endure the distraction of ill raised, ill bred and obnoxious louts. Wonder why some many parents are choosing private and Christian schools? We make the sacrifice and pay private tuition to send our child to a private school so that she can advance in atmosphere where learning is paramount and ill behavior is NOT TOLERATED. Corporal punishment is available but RARELY REQUIRED because the students know that it is available and will be used with the parents blessing. Frankly, I have never known it to be used but know that it is available when all else fails. God help a child of mine who gets a paddling at school . Call the social workers if you like but if you take them out of my home because I punished them, just plan on keeping them.

I am not sure that the rap sheet is relevant to the discussion, but it certainly makes you wonder about the type of clientele that frequents this establishment. Everyone is entitled to frequent whatever location they choose. As for me and my house, we will elect another venue. BTW, I am certain that everyone who was in attendance would be welcome in most local churches; no cover charge.

What a sad and unnecessary tragedy. Brother dead. Brother in jail charged with the death. No doubt, a mother grieving, siblings distraught and devastated, a neighborhood in turmoil. My sympathy and heart go out to all of the real victims of this tragedy. There will be plenty of time to judge and analyze when all the facts come to light through the legal systems. This is not a time for baseless conjecture. It is a time for mourning for so many. Family, friends, neighbors, police, EMT personnel (who have to face these tragedies daily). What a sad day. My thoughts are what if. Too late for this young man. What will YOU do today to prevent future tragedies such as this?

I think that the real issue is decorum. Wilson apologized to the White House but the real apology was owed to the Congress. It was the dignity of that body that was injured. Had Wilson made his comment anywhere else, it would be fair game. The problem is that he is member of the United States House of Representatives and when a President of the United States addresses that body, certain courtesies are expected by tradition and common courtesy. After the speech, he is entitled to express any opinion which he chooses. A joint session of Congress is a not a meeting of the House of Commons. The issue is one of boorish behavior, not the content of the comment.

What we really need is a viable 3rd political party that is truly conservative. The Republican party at one time stood for conservative positions and the Democratic party was an advocate for the liberal position. Both positions have merit. Now, if you honestly examine both parties you might well conclude that they are both branches of the Big Government Party. All of them are bought and paid for. Consevative citizens elected a Republican president and controlled both houses and abortion continued without any attempt to end it. Now, we have elected a Democratic president and Democrats control both houses of Congress and the wars go on and the promise to shut down Guantanamo is renigned upon. One size seems to fit none.

The point is Democrat or Republican, once politicians reach a certain level it seems they forget where they came from and who put them in office. I really believe that at some point, all of these politicians meant well and started off to serve the people but along the way, money, pride, and fawning political hacks have caused them to think that they have attained the status of gods. I don't believe in term limits because there is the potential to loose some good public servants, but I am beginning to think that term limits may be part of the answer.

You speak as if Tina Hall has 5 votes on the Commission. She has just 1 vote. So what if she asked questions? What big babies these grown "men" are if the comments and questions of one commissioner out of 5 made them take their ball and go home! You can rest assured that if these "businessmen" thought that they could make this project work, the possiblity of loosing 1 vote out of five would not stop them from going after a profit. I went back and watched the tape of the meeting and was not at all impressed with Miller's attitide and comments. If he would not attempt to negotiate a deal with the remaining four commissioner, then he probably knew that his clients plan was half-baked and not workable and used the questioning by Hall as a cheap stunt to back out. Mr. Miller, grow a pair.

By the way, what is the role of the EDC in all of this? Shouldn't they have played a MAJOR role in this since their job is ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT? I am curious as to why Miller and his client did not go through the EDC and have the benefit using this COUNTY FUNDED economic development vehicle to win an important endorsement? At one time, the EDC was a major player in marketing the Industrial Park. Why the end run?

I don't really understand all the hoopla. Seems like Miller should have put his proposal on the table. The County should have determined if the price was sufficient and the use consistent with its goals for the property. Then vote it up or down. Forget about the concessions and percentages of the gate. Set the price, and say yea or nay. The plan to allow local charities to participate is just a bunch BS. They will be allowed to participate if it will contribute to the bottom line of the investor and they can be used to generate traffic. This is all about making money by Miller (nothing wrong with that) and should be treated as such. As a businessman, Miller would not have pulled this off the table if he really thought it would work. As to whether or not the light company will locate here, it will be a matter of economics. If they can get a tax concession and the location is close to their customers, they will locate. This is all a lot of supreme media manipulation by a media professional. That's his job and he seems to be practicing on the citizens of Rowan. It may pay off in the future if he can dupe the people of Rowan with his theatrics. Don't forget his history with Commission and willingness to use the press to manipulate public opinion. Once again, that's what he does for a living. Take you ball and go home if they won't play by YOUR rules. I am no fan of the Commission, but in this whole deal, they represent the public and the attack on them is really an attack on me as a citizen.

Had one in my neighborhood growing up. She was sour, hateful, and the last one to move into the neighborhood. (They always are) My grandmother told us to pray for her because her behavior was an indication of how miserable she was. Generally people who get fixated on things like a pet walking across their yard, etc., have absolutely no life or outside interests and they become obcessed with minor things. Best thing to do is shoot them and put them out of their misery.

Pets are very important, especially for the elderly. I wonder if anyone considers the stress and anquish which this vindictive behavior caused the pet owner? Cats tend to be territorial and it is highly likely that the food in the traps enticed the cats onto the neighbor's property. I wonder what the pet owner did without in order to bail his cats out? I suspect that the vindictive neighbor has some sort of phobia about cats. I have a phobia of neighbors and moved out to the country as far away from people as possible because of jerks like the trap baiter. What did he use, sardines? I would wager tha thet trap-baiting neighbor was relatively new to the neighborhood and the pet owner was a long time resident.

I didn't find Dr. Fisher's statement to be racist. She was trying to explain why there is resistance/reluctance to screening in populations based upon community knowledge of such atrocities as the Tuskegee "study" which allowed black men with syphyllis to go untreated (while they thought they were being treated) in order to study the long term effects of the disease on the human body. Further, she points out that because a large number of minority women are poor, they are less likely to have the financial ability to participate in early screening and treatments. While the disease is not selective in the pain and suffering it causes, racial factors often result in late detection and treatment which cause a greater incidence of the pain and suffering among poor women, a great proportion of which are women of color. This is simply factual information which should be taken without judgement or any attempt to use race for any purpose other than a statistical basis to address the problem and help women who happen to be in a cohort group with an elevated incidence of the disease. This is Public Health 101.

SalisburyPost.com -- Your guide to Rowan, Cabarrus, Davie and Davidson counties, North Carolina : SalisburyPost.com - Area - Retail brokers trying to remain optimistic

Speaking of the Salisbury Mall, its location has always been something of a mystery to locals. Prior to its construction, it was generally assumed that Salisbury's first major mall would be located near I-85 to take advantage of that major transportation artery. Due to the substantial investment in the Salisbury Mall, one must assume that market analysis was performed to convince major retailers to anchor the mall. The question which remains unanswered is why the mall has never really flourished as initially anticipated. Obviously, the distance from I -85 is a factor. The initial anchors were Belk's and JCP, both of which were major downtown Salisbury retailers. Was the plan to suck the downtown Salisbury shopper out to the (then) new mall? The effect was initially devastating to downtown Salisbury, but without commensurate benefit to the Mall. Fortunately, downtown Salisbury has re-created itself and is once again reasonably vibrant. The long-term prospects for Salisbury Mall will remain less than brilliant until it becomes a "destination."
