Redeye VC : Help me rename "Lifestyle Business"

There are two types of hitters in baseball, one is the homerun hitter, the other is the base hitter. I think you can work off this connotation with the term "RBI-Business" but that sounds forced: Reaistically, I think the proper connotation already exists in "Lean Startup" for later stage companies that are set on this model and Bootstrapped for companies that haven't decided yet.

Feld Thoughts : What Do You Suck At?

I would say I have the opposite problem, I suck at focus. I love big concepts and ideas -- and I often lost sight of steps that need to be completed.

I like working, I often get into grooves where I can get some great detailed work done. But I really suck at remembering, listing, prioritizing, and logically completing tasks at hand. Instead, I just kind of float in and out of what my mind thinks is most important at the time (and usually I'll remember something else and switch to that halfway through a task).

If I wanted to blow smoke up anyone's rear-end I'd call this holistic work -- in reality it's plain unproductive.

Cool exercise btw, helps to remember that you need to work with other people who's strengths are where your weaknesses are. Thank god I have a co-worker who is very methodical and can remind me of these things.

Pros will resell this service to their clients. Using them as our salesforce we can have a package cost that the wedding party pays for to have the service available to all guests (both upload and access). The photographer gets a piece of this upfront, and then gets a second bite when people order his/her photos. We should set up mechanisms to handle printing and shipping outside of snapfly/etc. - that way we can also allow printing of the guests shots, and take the full profit for those.

Startup Weekend San Francisco — November 16-18 : Idea Form

This idea is stolen from the Boulder forum. My apologies to David Cohen but, like him, I would REALLY benefit from this service. Here's David's idea:

Here’s a wacky one I’ve had in my head for a year or so now. I am always forgetting to buy gifts.

So you enter birthdays of your mom, your sister, your niece, etc into the site. For each person, pick the (multiple) types of gifts they would like (flowers, toys, gift certificates, etc) and the amount you’d like to spend for that occasion ($10, $20, $30, $50, etc).

A week before that birthday, the user gets an email with 3 gift options (randomized based on the types of things they marked as appropriate for this person) at the appropriate price level.

One click, and it’s ordered.

You could even have an option to simply “send it” if the email isn’t responded to in time, etc (I’d use that).

The site gets revenue from ecommerce commissions or quantity discounts.

Simple, but it solves a real problem.

Take a look at www.cofoundr.com - they are trying to do this. I'd love to see this done in a way that's useful (as I've searched for co-founders online before), but there are very large barriers to success here.

1) Ideas - do you share the complete nuts and bolts of your idea openly if you're looking to devote the next 3-5 years of your life to it? Not really. As an entrepreneur interested in helping someone with an idea - I'm not going to sign an NDA that early in the conversation (just like VCs, people will simply look at too many projects to open themselves up to the legal risks).

2) Trust - Hard to generate the level of trust required for people to co-found a company together. Projects are fine because you can fire people, bring new people on, redefine the specs, etc -- Startups require a LOT of dedication and loyalty to the guy/gal next to you in the foxhole. I can't imagine doing that successfully with someone I didn't know. (Then again, online dating works to some degree, maybe I'm old fashioned in this respect).

3) Quality of Work - How do you judge who's good without seeing them in action. I wouldn't bring on a co-founder/partner based on a good resume, I'd want to work with them first.

How could these 3 issues be fixed?

This is blatantly awesome. Socially conscious network gaming. This is similar to the idea above about creating positive network reenforcement for eating right, working out, preventing carpal tunnel, etc. Honestly though this feels like the launch product of a system that could evolve to include all these "games" that improve your life and reward you socially on your network.

What about as a prize we offer bragging rights (in form of virtual decoration and points) that reward consistent effort, recruitment, improvement, and top rankings (most active state, or college, or city, or individual within any given network, etc).

James - this is an awesome idea.

An electronic running partner. We all know going to the gym with friends motivates us more because we don't want to let our friends down. People work together with friends to get more healthy. If we came up with a smart way to discourage cheating we could introduce competitions between groups. "Who's the healthiest company in silicon valley" etc.
