Race Relations Project : The World is Full of Surprises

This is not anything to surprising to me. My best friend’s mother’s side of the family is Jewish. They are African Americana and believe they are the lost tribe of Israel. There are black Jewish people so that’s nothing that is to shocking. I guess it is surprising because the tribe was found in Zimbabwe but then that might make more sense to why we have black Jewish people living here in America. If they have such similarities to Jewish people they are most likely Jewish. It shows how much the world for the most part is really diverse with different cultures and religions being spread around the world.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

That is crazy that this kind of thing is going on in the 21st century. How can you possibly ban someone from going to their prom because of their sexual preference? That is so wrong on all levels. I think the school needs to re evaluate and think what kind of image they are trying to have. How can they possibly tell this couple they can’t go to prom because they are lesbians who make these rules? Homosexuals are already going through enough and trying to fight for their rights and now you’re putting rules on high school students? Seems kind of backwards to me.

Race Relations Project : The White Minorities

I don’t really see the problem with this. I feel like things might be more leveled and people of both minorities and whites will both be in control. Our president is white and black. I feel like there will be no major event where minorities will have the most power and whites will be under. We are supposed to be growing as a nation and finding hot to become one. Where not suppose to be worrying about who should be more powerful or not. On the list of the world wealthiest person the top 5 people are not all even whites which shows that minorities are doing what they have to do.

Race Relations Project : What about health care?

Although I believe that illegal immigrants are hard workers. I don’t believe that they should get free government services such as health care. They do need to pay taxes like everybody else so they can get health care and other services. It’s not fair that citizens and legal immigrants have to pay taxes but they are receiving the benefits of it. We do need sometime of change to regulate things and make things fair. I don’t know what type of system the government can come up with but one needs to be made up. They need to start regulating things. The illegal immigrants are basically stealing from those hard workers that do pay their taxes.

Race Relations Project : What about people who can only "afford hard work"?

Having a lot of family and friends that are Nigerian I know that it can be pretty difficult for people to get their papers especially when money is in the picture. People need to learn that it is not that easy for people to get their papers. I don’t feel like illegal immigrants steal jobs from American citizens because most of the times they hold the jobs that American citizens don’t want to do. Illegal immigrants although it is wrong they are still hard workers and deserve the same respect any other hard worker gets. They should try and get their legal papers because at times they have the same benefits and opportunity that legal immigrants get.

Race Relations Project : What might be the second step?

When it comes to the topic of child slavery I am also clueless of what the second step might be. Most of my clothes are made in foreign countries and I’m sure they might be made by some form of modern day slavery or through sweat shops and it is WRONG on all levels but as an individual I don’t think there’s anything I can do that will make any type of impact on supporting these companies that make their clothes trough sweat shops. Growing up in the American society and not ever being aware of how most of our clothes are made its hard to just stop wearing these clothes cause it’s like where does that leave me.

Race Relations Project : What is the end goal...really?

I think the end goal is to be open minded and understanding about things we might not experience personally. Just because I might not go through something or experience it doesn’t mean I won’t be able to have an understanding or see where the next person is coming from. This is a very good question because we have been in class for a whole semester and the point is to leave being a little more open minded and understanding even if you don’t change your beliefs or morals. We are trying to make the next generation better and not worse than the generation we are in now. If people don’t start talking about these things and being aware then we will never break the cycle and history will keep repeating itself. Sometime we have to look at the bigger picture in life take off our shoes and put the shoes of other people on whether it is a black person, and Arab person etc. As educated students we have to learn how to start being open minded about certain situations and just take ourselves out the shell for a while add see where other people are coming from. When people start to do this I think the world will be a better place and there will be more of an understanding through cultures. We can fix the whole world and not everybody will ever be willing to conform to such ideas. Sometime you have to just sit back and listen without putting your opinions in and see where everybody else heads are and just listen. When people start to do that like Laurie said that light bulb on top or heads will light up. I don’t think I was an unreasonable person before this class and with certain topics Sam does bring up my little light bulb does light up and even though I might not have thought anything of a certain situation before I say to myself “wow that’s a good way to look at that situation” There isn’t an end goal for everybody per say. Every individual is different and everybody has a different time of when their light bulb my light up and some people’s light bulb might never light up. People have to reach that understanding by themselves as much as we can talk about race relations as long as the person is not willing to let go and understand they will never do it. Race relations want people to be able to be comfortable to talk about certain race problems without being scared or feeling guilty. Sometimes getting you light bulb to turn on might be hard depending on the circumstances someone might be in. People getting certain beliefs and morals engraved in them at young ages like Prussian Blue the twins that are white supremacist but have been brought up in that culture and they probably don’t even understand why they have those beliefs.

Race Relations Project : Want to Learn Chinese (Mandarin)?

Although I understand why you may feel mandarin might not be a relevant language to learn. I have to disagree with you. The reason why they might want to start teaching children to speak mandarin in high school is the same reason why they teach high school student Spanish or French or Arabic. China and America have a lot of business that they do together. For someone who was trying to make a career in the business world might want to learn to speak mandarin so it can improve their communication skills when doing business. Certain languages are good to know in certain fields (although English is the most used language). I am a crime law & justice major and I want to work for the FBI and when I met a representative from the FBI they said learning Arabic might improve my chances of getting the job. A nurse living in NYC might want to learn Spanish so they can communicate with their patients who can’t speak English. I think learning a certain language depending on your field might be very handy.

Race Relations Project : What about the men?

I believe that some men do try to conform to what society perceives them to be. From the way they dress to the way they talk and even to the way they may treat women. In the African American society men who are mostly popular and the society I grew up in are always rappers or basketball players. I know too many black men that aspire to be rappers and basketball players without even thinking of getting the right education first. Even when it comes to the way they dress most of the fashion trends start with celebrities and then young men start to try and dress like this. I remember when I was growing up back in the Bronx guys caring about “being fresh” (having the brand name clothes). It had to be Jordan’s, Gucci’s and Prada’s on their feet. I think the only difference between the way men let society/media affect and the way women do is that women take it more serious because they want to be “beautiful and more accepted”

Race Relations Project : Women

The play in class today was good. These are topics that a lot of females probably go through on a daily basis. When the question what does it mean to be a woman is asked? I answer there is no one response to this questions. All women are different in their own way. There is no one look, feature or anything to be considered a woman. Long hair, short hair, tall, short, these are all attributes of being a woman. But being a woman is different in different cultures across the nation. That’s a pretty difficult question to answer. I consider myself a woman because I am independent, I was born with breast and a vagina but there are so much more things deeper than that. Hollywood and the media don’t portray women the right way in most cases. I know in the black community women are portrayed to have wide hips and a big but and are most of the time thicker. And in the Hollywood community women are often slim, with nice long hair. Depending on the culture you are brought up in and the community you’re a raised in the way you maybe see the way a woman should look might be different. I think women all over the world need to learn that there is not a certain way all women should look. We have to love ourselves the way we are first before anybody will love us. Not everybody likes the look of the “ideal woman” whatever that look is suppose to look like. In Nigeria young ladies are often slimmer this is often a symbol that they are hard workers and their mothers are raising them well to become hard working women. When they become women they tend to get thicker which is a sign of wealth and success. Across different cultures women are portrayed differently. For the most part women in Nigeria are suppose to be the one who cook, cleans, raise the children and often don’t have a real career. Even though there are still women who don’t conform to this like mother who is a single mother making more money than my father will ever see. The media plays a great role in the way women are portrayed in American society though. Growing up as a child all my Barbie dolls were slim with longer hair and flashy clothes in there nice pink cars. Girls grow up wanting to be like the models they see on TV and in magazines. If people start telling their children about self love at a young age it might help them to learn how to be more confident in themselves. Women will always be beautiful in their own different ways.

Race Relations Project : What about the "occupied territories"?

The “war” between Palestine and Israel has been going on for years now and I don’t think that America has any say on who really owns the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The maps show that the West bank is owned by the Palestinians but they are surrounded by Israeli territory. Everything is so close together that it is hard to actually determine who owns what. This war has allegedly been going on since biblical times I don’t see it ending anytime soon. Both the Jewish and Arabs are not willing to come to a compromise. Even as the highest judicial court in the world might say that the Gaza Strip and the West Bank belongs to the Palestine they Israelis will not give up without a fight especially since they have been fighting for this for years.

Race Relations Project : The tyranny of radical Muslims...

As a Nigerian person I am starting to feel how she may feel. After the alleged attack on Christmas day by a Nigerian person, a lot of disrespectful of Nigerians have been floating around. It’s sad that the majority of people see the image of Osama Ben Laden and automatically tie that Muslim/Islamic people. It’s sad because to my knowledge Islam is actually one of the most peaceful religions. But what are these people to do when they are pushed to the edge. You can’t blame everybody of Islam/Muslim belief on whatever certain extremist may do. Just the same way I don’t blame every white person for what white supremacist and KKK members might have done to African Americans. People need to stop being ignorant and closed minded about things like this. Not every person that are Muslim/Islamic are not extremists and don’t believe in the suicide bombings. On another side I can remember clearly right after the September 11 attack the summer after that my cousin and I were 11 at the time and we were traveling to Nigeria by ourselves. I remember seeing a few Arabs wearing their traditional clothing and being pretty scared and even praying. But I was 11 at the time and was just sacred because of the things I heard and watched on TV. I didn’t know any better. But as someone that is 19 and being a frequent flyer and having friends who are Muslim/Islam I couldn’t imagine ever being scared of the “Osama Ben Laden” image. That is their culture they all can’t be looked down upon just because they are Islamic. I remember being in the airport and certain people being singled out for more searches because of the way they looked and where they were flying to. I went to Nigeria recently for Christmas 09 break and when the attempted suicide bombing took place I was watching CNN and I was like damn Nigerians already have a bad name for scamming people and now this, I hope my family and I don’t have problems flying back into the States. We actually didn’t have any problems because we are all American citizens. When conversations of this Nigerian bombing came up I would always say that guy doesn’t represent Nigeria in any type of way because we have never been known to take out such acts and I ended any comments that would come after. There will always be ignorant people in the world that will never want to be understanding and open their eyes to see things as a bigger picture. It’s sad that those ignorant people have a huge impact and it’s totally not their fault I blame the media for that too. When the media is putting up pictures all day and people are hearing and reading into things like this they start to feed into it more.

Race Relations Project : Creating Terrorists

Wow! This is very deep. When it comes to the topic of suicide bombers, once again I can’t understand why people call these people crazy or extremist when most of them time they do these suicide bombings in revenge for one thing or the other. Like Glenn Greenwald said these unnecessary killings have been going on for over a decade now and probably longer than that. How many American-haters and new suicide bombers are we creating every day? American troops are just being reckless and taking things overboard. This is not a topic to use for comedy but comedian Cat Williams in one of his acts said how do we look? We have all these guns, bombs, and weapons of mass destruction to fight people wearing sandals and walking around practically harmless. I can’t even be mad at the suicide bombers that decide to retaliate when their innocent loved ones have been killed. I say this all the time to my friends and family I can’t even imagine how the streets of America would be if things were vice versa, if this was the ground of the war. I’m scared of what could even possibly happen. America keeps on provoking these people and making things worse. I wonder if they are trying to wipe out the Arabs, in Afghan, Iraq, Iran and so on. I don’t support the war in Iraq and never did. I feel like it’s just wrong on all levels. The people who bombed the world trade center in 2001 must have been provoked from previous things. No sane person just wakes up one morning to kill random people it just doesn’t sound right. I don’t see what makes “us” (Americans who believe in the war) feel like they are any better than the Arab/Muslims that are defending their country by blowing themselves up. “We” are just as bad, American troops have been there for about 10yrs for a reason that today is not clear. How many people will they kill before they are satisfied, how many mothers will be shot and kids will grow up without a family all in the name of retaliation? I never knew that we practiced two wrongs make a right. We have so much going on in our society to worry about that I can’t understand why we are worried about what is going on in a whole different nation. Slowly people are backing out from supporting America because we are just going overboard now. We are killing unnecessarily, and using force that doesn’t need to be used. First we were looking for Osama Bin Laden, and then looking for weapons of mass destruction, 9yrs later we still have not found anything. My question is why are we still there? Why are we still killing thousands of people because I’m sure the number of people killed during September 11th is nothing to close to the number of innocent people dying because of the war?

This letter was pretty touching. But, personally when I think of inmates I don’t think of them as being inhumane or not being humans. They are still humans with a heart, emotions and have a right to have compassionate. They are no different than me and you, they are still people just they are serving a punishment for doing something wrong. I have friend that have been in jail and are in and out of jail and I’ve seen them be compassionate, love and care about people. It’s always good to hear from those inside prison talk about how they feel about certain things.

Race Relations Project : Why Is This Racist? Really...

-All white basketball league? I don’t see the need for why this guy will feel the need to create such a team in the first place. I don’t see how this will start a business and what his point is. There are black and whit people in the NBA league today and people from different backgrounds and cultures. I don’t see how this is giving people a chance when it’s leaving out so many other people. How can you prove that someone is fully Caucasian, when here in America today hardly anybody if fully Caucasian (whatever Caucasian is suppose to be). The AABA is trying to restore court sanity in the game of basketball?? What does that even mean? A lot of sports tend to get violence, hockey being one of the top sports where fights break out in almost every game, that’s a predominantly “white” sport”. Even if he wasn’t trying to come off racist, it basically just is what it is you can’t say a lot of white guys don’t like the upscale tempo of professional basketball without sounding racist because basketball is dominated by mostly minorities. I can’t believe that he actually thinks that he is going to get somewhere with this when its 2010 and the NBA has been something that started since 1946. Who does he think he audience will be and how does he think he will make any time of profit. This just doesn’t even make sense to me at all. Someone made a comment about how white men are underrepresented in the NBA and I don’t think that is the case. There are some great white ball players who do get their chance in the league. Just because minorities might be better in the sport doesn’t mean they are underrepresented. In regards to the comment that “the_situation “ said “the NBA just is not into decent white folk, but would rather spring for a young, high flying black person to ‘wow’ the crowd with dunks. The reason for this is because dunks are what the majority of the fan base wants. So, with that in mind, is it really wrong for Moose to please a different fan base by having a slower tempo, “white” style of game?” What does that even mean? The NBA isn’t into “decent white folk” so the people that play basketball are not decent? Is this because basketball gets violent every now and then? With men running up and down a court and all the testosterone I would assume it would get violent every now and then just like hockey are those guys decent or should we get “decent black guys” to play that sport. The NBA is doesn’t look for “high flying black person to “wow” the crowd with dunks”, there so much more than that half the people that do play basketball can’t even dunk. “White style of game” I don’t even know what that means basketball is basketball its either you know how to play or you don’t. There is no need to make an all white league it will just bring more controversies to America and we already have enough to deal with.

I think that the tragedy in Haiti is extremely saddening. Every time I think of this I wonder how in the hell that whole country will ever be able to be a stable country. It is sad that the whole nation came into shambles like that and rebuilding will probably take years. It’s interesting how people are still trying to have a business and outdo others when they basically have nothing. I guess people are just trying to survive and move on with life as much as they can. Life has to go on, they have to continue living, and making a business out of anything with any means necessary.

Race Relations Project : Christian Invaders - the turnaround

When it comes to the war in Iraq I can see where Sam is coming from. He’s a sociologist and is open minded and most of the time with a lot of issues you have to be open- minded and see things from another perspective. When Sam calls American “Christian Invaders” I’m sure he’s using that term from a Muslim perspective. After seeing all the videos of how politicians use God’s name for the reason why we are at war it makes it seem like they are professing a Holy War. I try to put myself in the shoes of the Arab/Muslim and I can’t understand how people can’t see where these people are coming from. I did my own personal background to see how this war even started and I saw videos of the Taliban saying that Americans have been messing with them for years and these are things we are not even aware of they. They aid that they Americans want everybody to conform to Christianity and they see it as a Holy War. I see it the same way to, I can’t understand any other reason America will feel the need to go to a country and destroy its whole community using the excuse that they are looking for “weapons of mass destruction”. My question is: Who the hell do we think we are that we have a right to do such things? I’ve watched videos of soldiers being extremely ruthless, killing innocent people, and every time I think of it I ask myself “what would we do if things were turned around? How would it be if people where shooting down the streets of NYC everyday and bombs and missiles where going off in all directions and around the whole country. I would be terrified. People need to wake up, open there eyes and mind and think about what this war is really about. President Bush in 2001 said that there were weapons of mass destruction, well hey we have weapons of mass destruction too; we are actually using our weapons on a nation that doesn’t have half of the means to really go to war like we do. We have so much money and dominate so much that we can actually fly soldiers, tanks, planes and so much more to a whole different county. The saddest part about is that till today 9yrs later no weapons of mass destruction has been found. So my question is what are we really there for?’ Oil? Holy war?” Questions that nobody in authority will probably ever answer honestly. This was one of the best lectures in class so far. Sam used a real good way to see things from another perspective and those that can’t understand that. I think they are honestly close minded to the situation.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

This game is just not right, and I can’t understand why someone will make a game like this. But the way I see it’s just as bad as any other game that people play from call of duty, to grand theft auto, there all violent games that portray killing, prostitution and other things that are negative. With the games people play these days I wasn’t really surprised seeing this video although it is absolutely absurd. I don’t see what the joy of this game can be, or who would even play this game and what age group this was targeted for in Japan. I think games that are overboard like this one need to be put off the shelves and be banned because it is morally wrong and disrespectful.

Race Relations Project : I really want to know also...

I’m happy that this question has finally been brought up for a topic of discussion. Everything Sam says for the most part I feel like is very relevant but I feel like I’m already an open minded person, and most of the situations he brings up im already aware of it. But it’s not about its changing your opinion or making a difference. I think it is more about listening and just seeing where he is coming from you don’t have to believe everything he is saying or change the person you are for you to take in what he is saying. At my last race relations session I mentioned how I felt like I was already a person who had similar vies Sam had, but that’s just me I’m sure there are plenty of people who are not aware of certain things or who are scared to talk about race issues and so on. In response to a few responses above I don’t feel like he is full of shit I just feel like he tries to go straight to the point and tries to be a real eye opener. There are a lot of things that Sam says and like moxie2090 it just affirms what I already believed before. Sam’s intentions are just too open up our eyes up so we can notice things and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. We often by pass certain things and maybe sometimes we need to take the time to pay attention and see what is going around in our society. Certain things might not affect us directly but affect us indirectly. When Sam says’s things about the white guilt that’s where I don’t totally agree with him. I don’t think that when white people are having race conversations with people of color they hesitate to say things because they feel guilty it’s probably because they don’t know what to say because they most likely don’t experience certain things. So it’s not that there guilty in my opinion just speechless when it comes to certain race topics. But like Sam said in the beginning of the semester he’s not trying to change anybody’s opinion/beliefs or attitudes he’s just trying to have people be more aware and to think a little bit more about the things we probably don’t notice or think about. I think the class is a good eye opener for those who are not aware of certain things, are afraid to express themselves and those who are simply just blind and ignorant about certain race issues, and social issues that people besides themselves might go through. Even though I consider myself as one of those people that Sam is not referring to the class is very interesting and he does make a lot of good points.
