When I became a teacher I joined, mostly because of all the horror stories we were told in college and by our union reps about lawsuits and teachers that were fired for personality conflicts with administration. But I soon saw where my money was going and what NEA was saying and doing in my name. After two years of teaching I became the first teacher I knew to refuse to renew my membership. That was 21 years ago. Both of my parents were teachers and my dad was the building rep at his school for many years. But within a few years they both did the same and became vocal against the NEA.
