When he tells the class that they suck, it is the equivelent of getting an F on a quiz.. The way Jones runs the class is that performances are tests. Other teachers use quizes to show students how they are doing between tests. Well in a way every practice is like a quiz and Jones is just telling the class the result of the quiz. If it isn't what they want to hear, maybe they should do their homework by practicing their instrument like they would any other class. If a band teacher is not allowed to tell people that they aren't meeting the teacher's standards, then maybe we should get rid of grades completely. Yes Jones shouldn't have "twapped" these students but it is not something that should ruin his carreer.

Here is the thing, Jones is a good teacher and I believe that he has the hardest posible teaching job. Music isn't simply formulas like math. Music needs to be something that you care about to learn. If these students aren't willing to learn then there needs to be consiquenses. Sure there are better ways to discipline students like flunking them out but he needed to do something. I believe that jazz one is the hardest of the band classes. I took it and I know that if you aren't disciplined and willing to learn, then you won't learn a thing. Some of these kids weren't willing to learn so it is clear to see why he would get upset. He wants everyone to see his passion for music and he gets sad when people in his class don't feel that way. If you don't want to learn music don't take a music class.
