the will to exist : Chew them up and spit them out

I think any case where there is suspicion of wrongdoing should be examined. I also think the military should do a better job of treating its members as if they are innocent until proven guilty. That is my primary complaint. Anyone who is given the power to kill on behalf of a nation state or other government body should be watched very carefully and judged when necessary. However, when you put someone into combat you damn well better tread lightly if the thought of charging them with murder even crosses your mind. You're paying them to kill the enemy and in war sometimes everyone looks like the enemy. I don't think anyone who hasn't been in actual combat should ever sit in judgement of a man they sent to be in combat. Is that clear enough?

the will to exist : Do states have the right to secede?

I tend to agree with you Hoa. States have every right to secede. If one did, however, I think it would promptly be invaded by the feds and forced back into line. Because that's our fake freedom in the 21st century.

the will to exist : Xbox 360 \"support\" fails to impress - in fact, Xbox 360 support sucks

Lee, Call back. Ask for a manager. Have your proof of account ownership ready. Above all, remain calm and patient. The initial rep will argue but insist in a relaxed tone of voice that you want a manager. Mention that you are writing about your experience with XBOX tech support for (blog, newspaper editorial, etc.) Don't call anyone a cunt or bastard - they may well be those things but it is not relevant to getting your problem solved and mentioning it an an angry tone of voice will only slow down or stop the process of getting your account back. Do you have a Microsoft Live account?

Hi Hoa, Yes, I believe in the smallest government possible to maintain basic order in a society. I'm not sure exactly how small that is but I do know what we have in the United States in 2009 is bloated. We are not the land of the free we claim to be. Fiat money won't be replaced until a major social upheaval occurs and I fear that will have to involve some type of revolution. What should replace fiat money? Anything that isn't faith based. The fed is a behemoth that has too much power. It needs to be humbled.

the will to exist : Ten crimes that aren't

Are we really shareholders? I for one do not feel like a shareholder. I feel more like an oppressed minority forced to pay for a system with which I have deep rooted moral issues. It's not an evil system, on the face of things, but it certainly needs a lot of change to be considered a good system.

I think you're being a little dramatic and assuming that I wouldn't hire someone else to do the checking if government didn't insist on having a certification monopoly in regards to various service sectors like health care. There is no perfect system and there are lots of dishonest doctors under the current system. Many of them defraud Medicare because it is so easy.

Here's a question - which is more important: freedom of choice or being "protected" from one's own actions? In regards to monopolies, isn't the government in and of itself a monopoly? If monopolies are bad then why is there a master monopoly on forcing others to follow the rules?

Eric, Thanks for dropping by. I think it's a bit of a stretch that risking my body as a projectile should entail forcing me to strap into a car. Why don't we force motorcyclists to wear a huge web around them that is attached to the motorcycle frame? Either way, it's too lonely being libertarian to argue with a fellow freedom lover. I'll take every freedom I can get.

Jim, If I understood your point it is that we are neither headed for doom or headed for high times. Is that an accurate synopsis? I don't really think we are thinking about controlling spending at all on the national level. This is why I lean towards the doom/gloom side of things.

the will to exist : Limiting cyberwar

Lincoln isn't one of my heroes. While I'd agree that operating outside the rules is sometimes necessary and also believe that changing the rules is part of playing by rules in the first place, I am very hesitant to condone starving human beings as a matter of policy. Were I a policy maker, I would hesitate to order the firebombing of a city. Firebombing Baghdad, for instance, would only make the situation in the surrounding geopolitical sphere worse. It would create more terrorism, not less. There are no easy answers in the Middle East.
