I am going to try to sell my house for as much as I possibly can, even if I think it is worth much less. If you can get someone to pay more for your house than what you think it is worth - GOOD FOR YOU and CONGRATULATIONS! People from California come here with a demented view of the housing market - and I want to take advantage of it. If they find value for your house at the price you listed it, and they want to buy it - it doesn't matter what you think your house is worth - it only matters what THEY think your house is worth. The valuation the assessor assigns is for tax purposes only. The valuation a buyer for your house assigns is based on an entirely different metric than the assessor. Therefore, you cannot, and should not try to relate the two. Ideally, you want the assessor to think your house is worthless, and the buyer to think your house is priceless. PS - you don't beg, you fill out a form. Let me ask you: If you had a house that you wanted to sell with an assessed value of $700K and, before you put it on the market, someone came up to you and said they'd give you $2.1 Million for it, would you turn them away and tell them "come back when your price is closer to the assessed value." or would you sell them the house?

believe it or not, you can think your house is worth 700K but put it up for much more thinking some idiot from California will be stupid enough to buy it. Buying and selling real estate is not always a rational decision, and the people who make money at it take advantage of this.

I can't understand why anyone has a problem with this. I did it too, and the assessor lowered the value of my house. I took advantage of lowering house values a few years back, they were raising the value of my house, when it should have been lowered. The assessor just takes guess based on their comparables as to the value of your home. The appeal process allows you to do research and find better comparables for your house. If they agree, you get adjusted lower, if not, it may even go highter, it's entirely legal. I saved money, why wouldn't/isn't everyone doing this? are you really so sheepish/lazy that you'll just pay whatever they tell you too? you all got the form in the mail and chose to do nothing, now your pissed at a guy who did something.

a mother that is dead will no longer produce milk either. The DOW had a responsibility to protect the cub before they killed the mom, and they failed. Let nature take it's course. She'd have made great food for a mountain lion, like the cub will too.
