Daily Camera.com: : Eight days, 1,000-year rain, 100-year flood - Boulder Daily Camera

This is a great 'for the record' account about the flood in Boulder. There have been tons of stories and communications of all types from various areas... but years from now, stories like this will be valued even more than they are today--which is still lots.

A telling indicator for CU's prospects is the location Butch cites when he first heard the rumor: "having dinner at Cracker Barrel." Maybe trying to get that Dushambe Teahouse vibe out of system...

Mr. Neguse, 28, you are young and naive. Have you noticed these past 20 years or so how interested Colorado taxpayers are in ponying up for a new tax for something that may not measurably benefit them directly?

"1,000 years from now, the United States of America would be remembered for three things: baseball, rock and roll, and the modern research university." It's crazy to think the modern research university will be remembered in its current form in 100 years. Much less 1,000. FWIW, I have my doubts about baseball in 1,000 years, too. As for rock and roll, most people already have forgotten it.

'What role Benson had in it, if any, is unclear' Bruce Benson and his wife Marcy are also the chairs of CU's fundraising campaign, and are among the largest donors in the history of the university. http://www.dailycamera.com/ci_17920632 So it's not THAT unclear...

Daily Camera.com: : Multiple car accident closes Boulder\'s 19th and Iris intersection - Boulder Daily Camera

If some random observer had estimated the car was going 110mph, would the Camera have put *that* unverifiable (and surely overestimated) guess in the headline as well? Even if a trained eye were watching for it, it would be difficult to estimate a speed like that. An random witness who likely saw it offhandedly... should not be quoted as an authoritative source as to speed in a headline even if you have him saying it on video.

...and CU's figure for same for 2011-12 is $9152--38 to 45 percent less than the Berkeley/UCLA figures. How is that keeping tuition lower than CU is???? http://www.colorado.edu/pba/budget/tuitionfees/tu... Berkeley and UCLA indeed have stronger reputations in many or most fields (while Colorado is stronger in certain fields).
For $1.4 million?! At that point, you can see cars coming a couple hundred yards away. They're not doing 70. And it's not *that* busy. I've walked across that intersection 20 times. Just... look both ways... and wait...maybe 10 or 20 seconds if, you know, there's an heavy flow... and walk across the intersection.
Daily Camera.com: : News - Boulder Daily Camera

Weird survey, to compare routes like this in an apples-to-apples way, even when unscientifically 'normalizing' for weekday/weekend use. I do that Baseline commute from Lafayette/Boulder many summer weekdays, so I'm not too surprised that Baseline is a well-used road. Don't know what I'd extrapolate from that except Arapahoe sucks and S. Boulder's hillier and less central for many such commuters. Also don't know what proportion of weekend/weekday riders you're counting. I'm sure Lee Hill and Left Hand are way more weekend-centric and volatile ridership based on weather. Also... I just don't believe this is a comprehensive survey of BoCo roads. Does this include, say, the roads on the CU campus? I imagine we're not counting straight paths like Boulder Creek Trail...but even city road arteries? Maybe a fault of the story and not the survey. But if meaningful conclusions are meant to be drawn from this--they really can't, based just on what we've got here.

Daily Camera.com: : CU tuition hike funded raises for Phil DiStefano, other top administrators - Boulder Daily Camera

Just to provide some digressive food for thought as we read through the fury... "It's cheaper to drive a Prius to campus from Fort Collins than to live in Boulder," said Fowler, a classics major. Maybe Leslie Fowler was being flip, or has family reasons to live in Fort Collins. But she shouldn't pin this economically absurd decision on the cost of 'living in Boulder.' Making a 110-mile round trip 4-5 days a week adds as much as 2,000 commuting miles a month. She's looking at operating costs per mile of over 30 cents (a very conservative estimate: fuel is not the only determinant). Add to this the opportunity cost of 2 extra hours on the road per day--and she would find living Boulder's a much cheaper option. source: http://www.piercetransit.org/rideshare/costs.htm.

Daily Camera.com: : CU regent: Tuition increases far outpacing state cuts - Boulder Daily Camera

It's useless because tuition revenue increases are not meant to replace state cuts dollar-for-dollar, and neither figure has a direct connection with expense-side components. Budget variables are way more numerous and complex than just these two components--as regent Ludwig points out. Additionally, a quick math lesson... If a number is cut 50%, it must be increased 100% to return to its original level...

Daily Camera.com: : Proposed green neighborhood would pull Erie west - Boulder Daily Camera

"Cast off its geographic shackles"?!? One of the main things that makes a town a COMMUNITY is geographic definition. Erie, encompassing its (neglected) Old Town, self-contained subdivisions like Vista Ridge, and totally untethered shopping centers like the one already at Arapahoe/287...these have already destroyed the geographic shackles (or "geographic unity") of Erie. Perhaps it should simply be annexed by its geographically unshackled neighbor to the south-ish... Broomfield. Erie residents may wake up to find out they now live in New Mexico.
