I just wanted to tell you what happened and how I am an “immigrant”. In the Korean American society, I am an immigrant 1.5th generation because even though I came here I went to high school and there is both Korean and American culture that shaped who I am right now. My parents dated in college and they got married right after they finished their undergraduate program. To get their master’s degrees, my parents flew to California. My parents went to University of California Berkeley for graduate program and my mom had to drop out because she was pregnant with my sister. My sister was born in San Francisco, CA. When my sister was 2, my parents took a road trip to New York for my dad’s Ph. D program. And I was born on my sister’s fourth birthday in Flushing, NY. (Yeah my sister and I have the exact same birthday but different years. nbd) At my age four, my mom’s illness made us all go back to Korea and my dad finished his Ph. D. program a year after.
After my dad finished school, we all lived in Korea for about ten years. My mom always planned that my sister and I will go to school in America. After my sister finished high school in Korea, three of us (except my dad) came to Maryland.
There are pretty good amount of Korean immigrants in the DMV (DC, MD, VA) tri-state area. Most people actually come to the United States for their kids’ education. So if they go back to Korea, their kids will have no problem speaking English which gives advantages when getting jobs and many others.
I think all the immigrants come to the United States for many different reasons but I didn’t think business was their number one reason for them to come. But one thing I noticed back in high school was that the Latino students from South America in my ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes came to the United States by following their parents who got jobs in the U.S. They didn’t seem to work hard for their studying but more like they were just tag along of their parents and things didn’t really matter.
When I was a student aid in a class in an ESOL class, I actually met a Hispanic student who barely spoke English. He said after school, him and his parents work cleaning an office building. I was very surprised that they came all the way up here to work at such a shitty job.

There is social transition where you come out to people and tell your people “this is what is going to happen to me in the future.” And then there is the legal transition where you change your documents like passport, driver’s license, credit card information, anything that has your information. And lastly, there is the medical transition. A man can become a woman; a woman can become a man. They start from taking hormone medications and actually get plastic surgeries and go through the transition into a new person. These people are stuck in between their sex and gender. Even though these transitions cost them a lot of money and time, they still want to be and live the life of who they want to be.
I think everyone in this world is not brave enough to understand the differences between others. Maybe back in the days, racism was the problem. Because white people didn’t understand the black people, they turned the black people into their slaves and abused them. I am pretty sure that homosexuality existed all the time. But now that we live in twenty first century, it is time for us to express ourselves and let people know that not everyone is same and by understanding and being considerate of the differences will make the world so much of a better place.
For this article, I don’t know why Mr. Devoureau had to get fired. I am pretty sure that they wanted someone to watch men pee in a cup for drug testing. I am pretty sure that Mr. Devoureau is not interested men. Or else, why would have he gone through all the surgeries and times? A woman became a man because she likes women, not men. So does it matter? I wouldn’t think that he would engage in sexual acts with the men. And I am pretty sure that (as long as he is normal,) he wouldn’t want to get sexual with someone else’s urine.
So the civil rights laws and court decided that Mr. Devoureau is not a man. What makes a man? Is it the existence of one’s penis? Transgenders can get a penis if they want. (though they may cost a lot of money for a woman to get a penis and they might not function as well real penises.) There are men that are feminine and women that are masculine. I think the people who made these decisions should rethink about the guy’s rights to work at a job wherever he wants to.

I also think learning a new language is good for future jobs. If I speak another language, it is possible for me to get a new job. Especially at situations like this bad economy. Learning foreign language also teaches you the nation’s culture. Which I think is very important for someone who lives in America. There are just so many people from so many different countries so learning a language would help them understand them. My high school ESOL teacher actually tried learning many different languages. She actually studied German when she was in college and now she tries to learn couple real life sentences from many of her international students from all over the world. She knows that in Asian households, people do not wear shoes in their houses. She also knows that Asian people do not shake hands but rather bow to show greetings. Not to mention to kiss someone on the cheeks or giving hugs to people in Europe. My goal actually is to study Japanese and Spanish sometime in my twenties and be able to speak the languages perfectly fine. So that one day if I have to work in Korea and work with Japanese people, I wouldn’t have to hire a translator. And I might be in a situation where I could work with Hispanic people in this country. I would definitely learn a new language for a job but only if the language is spoken in many countries or a “rich” country.

So I am from Rockville, MD, which is a suburban city outside of Washington DC. Which I think, compare to Penn State, is so much more diverse because I always say that Penn State is the whitest place I have ever been to in my life. Looking back to high school years, I think I saw more interracial couples than same race couples. White guy and Asian girl couples was very common, also Asian guy and White girl couples were too. I think there was one case where a white guy dated a Persian girl but I don’t think there were that many Persians in my high school (or I just couldn’t tell if they’re Persian or not because the Persian girl who dated white guy was my friend.) I have noticed a white guy and white-black biracial girl date. One thing I noticed in my high school was that there weren’t that many black students involved in interracial relationships. I don’t know why, but I have only seen one black guy who dated an Asian girl. Overall, my friends were cool with me being in an interracial relationship.
There is a YouTube video called Yellow Fever from WongFu Production. The video was about how white guys always take away the Asian girls from Asian guys. And the Asian guy wanted to be able to date a white girl. The Asian guy later meets an Indian guy who says “There is nothing impossible about Asian guys dating a white girl.” I agreed how he said “It is all about the guy’s confidence that gets the girl.” I think there is some sort of stigma or something that makes the colored men (Asian, Black, South American, etc) feel that “White guys are superior than us and that is why girls like them.”
Overall, I have nothing against interracial dating/marriage and it shouldn’t be a big deal.

Coming from Rockville, MD, a suburban city right outside of Washington D.C., I was exposed to a lot of gay community therefore I have no hatred against gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, etc. I even have gay friends from high school. From the beginning, I didn’t think there was any problem for someone being gay. Compare to heterosexuals, I believe they just have different preferences for someone they love. I think we as human beings are afraid of changes and dislike the differences and take the differences a difficult material they can’t just accept. If the United States is filled with people coming from different countries, culture, how do we get along? Sure we do not get along all the time. Everyone has different faces and body features but we still do get along (sort of). I believe the diversity is what makes this country so special and we should be proud of them. I always tell people that I come from D.C. and because we acknowledge the differences that everyone has, our country has become one of the successful countries in the world.
So the problem is, why can’t gays get married? When someone ask me that question, I say why not? What is the problem of two people in love getting married? Straight people do it, why not gays? It should be any two people in love’s right to be married. It is possible for interracial couple to get married, people from different countries can get married, people who believe in different religions can even get married (I have a friend whose mom is Jewish and his dad is and Arab), heck, there are people who are 20 years of age apart getting married.
So I am in another sociology class, SOC 030, Sociology of family with Dr. Silver. This week we are actually talking about marriage in the class. Interesting thing she said was “Marriage is just a paper work. Have you been to a wedding recently? Do you know what the best man and maid of honor does? They go with the pastor, or rabbi, or whoever to sign a paper, saying these people are married by law. They say ‘in the name of state and church.’” She also said, “Theoretically, I could go to the court and divorce my husband right now.” They all made sense to me. Marriage is just a piece of paper. However there are so many legal benefits that one can get out of marriage such as tax, insurance, etc. Many countries in Europe, some countries actually perform gay marriages. And some countries like France, England, and some Scandinavian countries legally recognize their cohabitation and the couples can get legal benefits.
So the other question is “Can gays raise a child right?” Why is this question even being asked? Are they afraid of the gays raising their kid to turn out gay? It is not scientifically proven but a person could be gay from birth. There also was a statistics that gay couples’ relationships don’t last long enough. Well there are straight couples that don’t last long. You can’t just have a baby and get married. Birth control is out there and if you didn’t use it right, you shouldn’t have gotten in a bed with that person. (Reason why I hate teen mom.) in France, England and Canada, they require a proof that they have been in a relationship of 1 to 3 years to be allowed to cohabit.
We are all human beings. We all come from different backgrounds; even if you are from the same country, such as religion, ethnicity, race, etc. doesn’t everyone deserve a same chance to love who they love and raise a child as a family? Because even if you are not related, you can become a family. (Look at the Greek life in colleges, they are brothers and sisters.) They say close neighbors are better than your relatives who you never see.

Some people say people in poverty have unplanned pregnancy and don’t have (many of) the contraception options available for them. Condoms and birth control pills are not that expensive to buy and there are places who give them out for free. The birth control has become so common in the world it makes me think that people in poverty getting an unexpected pregnancy is just an excuse. Because there are so many options and giving birth to the child and bringing him/her in the poverty they are living in is just a sad situation. What did the child deserve to be born in the poor? I think if the parent(s) cannot afford the baby to grow and be successful, they should put the baby for adoption.
Most people in poverty get money from the government to support the child. The parents in poverty should work hard to support the child and give their kids a chance to be successful. But there are some people who spend the money on their cars, shoes, alcohol, or even alcohol.
I think it is a person’s right to choose if they want to have a baby or not if they have the money to raise a child. But if you are in a situation where you cannot raise a baby, you shouldn’t because not only it is unfair for the baby, and you will never get out of the poor by pouring money you make on the child.
In high school, I knew a girl who was the fifth child out of six. She came from a pretty wealthy family and I think it was nice of the parents to have a lot of children when they can actually afford all of them to send colleges.
In the video, Tammy looked pretty happy with what she has. She would walk 10 miles to work at burger king. She wore the same clothes pretty much every day. She said her father would be proud of her. I think she is rationalizing because even though she lives in poverty but she is morally successful in her life.
