MetsBlog.com : Note: Gooden Confused, Fans Annoyed

Tone deaf idiots. How you can build a new multi-gazillion dollar park and not have a Met museum, '86 champs exhibit, etc., etc., is just inconceivable. This is stupidity on a monumental scale. The Mets have concave patches on their sleeves that they've all but admitted are supposed to look like credit cards, play in a phony Ebbets field with built-in faux-historical idiosycracies fully two decades after that sort of thing was at all novel, interesting, architecturally relevant, etc., spend much of each broadcast hyping the "Pepsi (TM) Porch", are worried about their icons defacing the Citi "brand," and oh yeah -- TWICE failed to clean house after an embarrassing September faceplant that left their rivals mocking them during a World Series celebration. Amateur hour on a permanent basis. Whew -- annnnnnnnnnnd, I'm done. Go Mets.

MetsBlog.com : Poll: Biggest Worry

Is this another one of those "I'm too smart to see the elephant in the room" posts? If the Mets keep ignoring the character of their players, they will continue to fail in clutch situations, be it a ninth inning at bat or the last few games of a pennant race. I'm hoping that psychology can change -- that as, say, Wright matures, he'll come through more frequently and not press as much. But there's no evidence of that happening to date. All we have is a team that can't finish.

We had a lot of luck last year with Church hitting second. I might swap him and Murphy and leave Castillo (who doesn't K much) in the 8 spot.

What else is new? Prepare for the parade of apologists. I like Wright a lot, but he's not a guy I want up in key situations in the late innings. Not that I'd pinch hit for him, but he's got a track record now. Chase Utley, he isn't, sad to say.

MetsBlog.com : Quote: Murphy is Fine, Focused on Peavy

How does that contradict anything I wrote? If the only way he's a Major League hitter is to ignore fielding, he belongs in the AL. The fielding as of now is acceptable only to the extent it's a temporary condition. If he can't focus on it and it doesn't get better, however, he should be in AA learning to be a complete ballplayer.

We never get full information and we can't be inside his head, but I'm on board with you. The incessant "hitting is my job" mentality very well could lead to lapses in fielding. His job is to be a baseball player. Because he's new to the outfield, learning to play left field is a HUGE part of "his job." This may not be his problem, however. If the Mets organization is zipping him around the diamond to get his bat in the lineup, the message is that the bat far outweighs the field.

Well, it's because there have only been four games that getting nothing out of the 8 hitter has been an issue. Just happens to have been an issue in the two losses. Point taken, though -- always hard to tell what the "issues" are, but keeping last season in mind, I think it's fair to say Castillo is one of them, along with clutch hitting and the back end of the rotation. With all of the changes in the bullpen, it's way too early to render a verdict on them. Lest we forget, however, it wasn't always the bullpen putting pressure on the hitters to perform late. Sometimes, it works in the other direction. And that's scary.

The pressing has got to stop, though. Anyone here think Wright was going to get a two-out hit with Murphy on second in the late innings? Anyone? No one has a 1.000 average in these situations, of course, but David sure as heck seems like his average goes down as the stakes go up.

MetsBlog.com : News: Mets sign Sheffield

He may not be the world's most motivated teammate, but I think Shane Victorino will think twice about spiking Reyes if Sheffield is coming in from his blind side. Again, with Randolph in charge of the team, this would mean Murphy would be picking pine splinters out of his rear. With Manuel, I get more of a sense that he's an insurance policy/ spot starter, and who knows? At any rate, the 500th HR will be a nice 20 second segment on the 2009 season DVD.

Eh, at a low price, this is not a horrible signing. It would be were Willie still manager, as his idiotic washed-up veteran mentality would have had Sheff starting and hitting third because of his "longevity." But, I think Manuel is wise enough to see Sheff for what he is, i.e., a RH pinch hitter/ spot starter against lefties.
