That includes brig an EMT and deploying to Iraq and getting the best meical training any college could never give me. Also I've recieved a lot of training in police work and effective counter-insurgency through means more aligned with political work and not traditional military action. Also because I enlisted kn the greatest volunteer army I can go to college for free and have all my education and housin paid for...I'd like to see one college in the country match that full ride scholarship...and if any oft spellig is off it's because I'm on a phone on a cor and not on a laptop in an office. In fact were being trained to hand over the country and wok as partners with the afghan people to secure their own country and borders from the Taliban in Pakistan...hmmm border countrol...weird! Also I can tell you that even after 9 years the afghan people we currently work with day to day that require interperators thank us everyday for being there and tell us how much the afghan people appreciate us. The funny thing is since I made the decision to quit my job and do this deployment I've been thanked by more afghan people for my service than Americans. I also find that strange and demoralizing. The enemy is not a uniformed person but a hidden element among innocent civilians. Eeryday these twenty year old will make decisions in the split second that carry a thought. That thought is would you rather be carried by six or judged by twelve. Three days before we left a few under twenty one "kids" were slapped with 400 dollar fines for enjoying a couple drinks before a year long deployment. Now, I'm 26 and I like the bars quiet and calm so I really don't care either way...but when this mother says these kids are going to make their own decisions, she is right and I personally find it disgusting that we live in a society that is ready and willin to let a 17 yea old sign up and go to war o make decisions on a daily basis that will affect their lives forever, but not give the same people the right to drink a beer! The national guard goes through the same basic training as your "real" armed forces. They go through the same job training, and in cases like mine they have more actual active duty time than the "real" armed forces. These national guardsmen have typically one or two deployments if not three over the time period of their career. These are also the same soldiers who volunteered in 2008 during the floods, 2003 during the floods and other times of need such as winter weather this last winter when motorists are stranded on interstate 80 overnight. The same people who ignored their properties being demolished by water to help strangers. When you say we're couch potatoes do you mean the 3000 people at camp ripley doing 15 hour days training at intense paces. Those "weekend warriors" that you are slamming didnt need a draft or monetary incentive-they enlisted out of patiotism and the inner calling to serve. Your comment should be removed for disrespect.
