The Matt Scott : farewell to a legend (g\'bye Josh Brown)

Patron Saint? I dunno how I feel about that :) Glad to know you're still "lurking" but you (are and) will certainly be missed not being on the forefront. Hopefully you have some outlet for voicing your opinions unbeknownst to us stuck in the web 2.0 world. Perhaps you'll pop into a cohort sometime soon. -Matt ps: Stop making me feel guilty about still playing WoW, I'm damned good at it and I don't wanna stop!

I agree with Adelle, I'm nearly certain that Wallis would never approve of left/right language. I'm going to assume that whoever wrote the press release either didn't clear it with the next level up, or that there was just a complete failure in editing. If sojourners does indeed continue with left/right language, or more specifically support thereof, then I'll probably have to send some letter of discontent, and stir up some questions. Good job on picking up on this, I normally only read through the front page stories, not the press releases, so I would have missed it.

(Ir)religiosity : Know Any Good Fiction?

Twilight! Ok, ok kidding. I cannot more highly recommend "The Silmarillion" perhaps you have read it (you said you read Tolkein in HS, but most people just mean LotR when they say that). Also, it's not fiction, but Kevin Roose's "The Unlikely Disciple" was a good non-academic read (about a semester he spent at Liberty University).

The Matt Scott : Thoughts on Pluralism

Aye, I can see the point that you both bring to the table, and Derek your questions are certainly cause a fair bit of introspection. While I, again, do affirm the Lordship of Christ, I think that I am a bit more on the side of learning, and helping others learn, more than, say, an approach that arrogantly throws such ideas out. I'd rather walk the line and proclaim my belief in the Lordship of Christ, while remaining respectful, understanding, and conversant with the beliefs of others. Perhaps I'm not as heady in regards to such proclamations like an evangelical would be, perhaps not even as much as Paul was. Perhaps I err too much on the side of caution, but I think a healthy respect for the beliefs of the "other" demands a lack of impetuous prostelyzation. @Derek- Will we see you at the Cohort tomorrow? @Andrew- Baseball! Bravo! Watch some games between two really good teams, let yourself get sucked in to a close game full of stressful pitches, and you'll be set.

The Matt Scott : Jesus, Interrupted

He'll openly admit that it's not a new concept, what it is is an argument brought down to laymen terms, making things more open and accessible to the non-scholarly community. "(note to self : "write book that sounds great but means nothing and retire to the Bahamas.)" You mean like half the crap that is stock for the bookshelves of Christian bookstores?

I think we're thinking along the same lines here, I have a habit of being a bit hazy when it comes to a message, so that's probably what went on here. No doubt Emergent is a helpful term, and will probably continue in use for some time, but I feel like the term is becoming more and more encumbered by tags and stigma's that have become attached by (often, but not limited to) outside influences.

The Matt Scott : iPhone blog: Islamic fundamentalists are smart(er)

I'm not referring here to Muslim extremism in Political power, but more to Muslim Extremism/fundamentalism in the form of terrorist/terrorist organizations. While any form of extremism in political power has next to zero sustainability, I'm saying that these groups are able to recruit more followers by using the either perceived or real injustice being perpetrated against them/their family/their countries.

I would strongly disagree with you on this point, If Christianity is solely concerned with the salvation of one's soul, then it has zero meaning for this world. Zero. I honestly don't believe that Christ died simply for one's post-mortem life/soul, but instead to begin the process of "Restoration" by bringing Heaven to Earth ("On Earth as it is in Heaven").

The Matt Scott : iPhone blog- the courageous cowards

I certainly will agree that Jesus ministry was primarily focused on the poor. It appears that when he would shine a light into places that wanted to remain hidden, it would be to show the injustice of the actions of the rich (Lazarus and the Rich Man for instance). I think the message being transmitted via tracts (and I really do read all the ones I come across) is not the same message that Jesus brought to the poor of his time. Instead, the message that I read is often one of condemnation, or some other form of attack on the reader, trying to convince the reader how... evil they are. I didn't give a complete background before going into my post, as typing on an iPhone is a challenge unto itself, but there is a bit more to the story behind the end point of my argument. I remember back when I attended an SBC assembly, and the pastor was a huge fan of tracts. I remember his instruction to those gathered, which was to give out tracts to those who appeared to need Jesus most. That sounds ok, but he continued, the Waiters and waitresses, the taxi drivers when in the city, the workers.
