Where will it all end? Big Brother is getting too big. It's probably time to move to a more hospitable place while it's still allowed.

It may be allowable under Iowa code but the unelected administrator / inspector/ bureaucrat in charge has complete discretion. This too is in the Iowa Code. Don't you think that Bill, knowing that it is cheaper to haul it elsewhere, would have done so? If I had the option 5 years ago, there is no question that mine would have gone elsewhere. There may be some unreported money changing hands here. I would start by checking the pockets of the DNR's Marion Burnside.

No matter what they say, SEMCO has known that they are high ever since they started accepting "hazardous" waste years ago. They certainly knew about it when I had to use them 5 years ago. Normally, when companies come up with a pricing structure, the first thing that is checked is the price of the competition to see if their plan would be competitive. The problem here is that there is currently NO competition. Theirs is the only game in town when it comes to disposing of "hazardous" waste. It is a pure monopoly with the blessing of the state. Why would SEMCO even consider offering a discount? I suspect there is more to the story than we are being told. There are reasons other than humanitarian ones for them to even consider lowering the price. Perhaps real competition or new regulations are coming. Stay tuned.

You can blame the DNR for this problem. According to their rules, the "hazardous" waste can only be landfilled in the same district where the waste was generated. Yes, Milan, Illinois tip fees are a fraction of the costs at SEMCO but the fire victims have no choice in where the asbestos goes. This guy got off cheap. My tip fees at SEMCO were nearer $100,000. I probably had less than a bushel basket of actual asbestos but since it was mixed with brick, all of it had to go, wetted down, covered with $600 worth of plastic while monitored by a bunch of (paid) goons in white suits. By the way, when asbestos goes to the landfill it goes in the same pile as your trash bags with diapers and such. They just charge about 10 times more because they can. The entire scheme is a joke designed to line pockets and create jobs with the DNR and EPA.. The scheme is lorded over by an unelected, vindictive, mercurial bureaucrat in Des Moines.

So if Hancher was so severely damaged that it was unusable, why would they heat and clean it for 2 seconds, let alone 2 years? Since the flood, a million dollars has been spent maintaining and heating Hancher- for what? Whoever is making the decisions, along with the building, should both be gone already- and please don't heat it for another winter.

According to the story, Deleware county can retroactively sign up for National Flood Insurance Plan (NFIP) up to 6 months after a flood. My questions are: 1. Why would any community participate in the NFIP until after a flood? 2. What good is the program (and all the extra employees) if the government will bail out the victims anyway? 3. Can I do that with my house and car insurance?

At risk of being homeless?? I am at risk of being homeless. Everyone including Bill Gates is at some risk of being homeless. The only reason to add a nebulous statistic (at risk of being homeless) to the actual homeless population, is to jack up the percentages. And who do they even define as homeless? Do they count people who moved back in with parents or just those in cardboard boxes. One only needs to follow the money trail backwards to the those paying for these studies to figure out the results- before they are even published. I'm calling b.s.

Government ethanol subsidies have been around for at least 40 years. Going back further, Henry Ford powered his first engines with it. One would think that an industry this mature would be able to stand on its own. Ethanol still cannot even power the facilities that make the stuff- let alone produce a surplus of energy. This is nothing more than a giant money grab... Gubmint moonshine.

The vast majority of the funds would be coming from those who would not even slightly benefit from, or have even heard of either of the trailer parks. Does anyone believe that this project would even be under consideration if the funding would have to be provided by the ones who would be affected by it? The scarey part is that there are tens of thousands of communities in this country with similar misguided wishlists- most of which want your money. This is how spending, on every level, gets completely out of control. It has become too easy to spend someone elses money. These are mobile homes people- either deal with the 100 year flooding or move them.
