I remember at least a couple occasions on the playground where a kid threw all their Pogs in the air and walked away while everyone else scrambled.

(for those who weren't in elementary school in the 90s, Pogs were cardboard discs with designs or pictures on them, that were used in combination with plastic or metal discs (a slammer) to play a sort of battle game where you wagered pogs and won/lost them based on your finesse with a slammer. they were before the plastic bonez game, but after devil sticks and the skip-it)

Heh, it helps that he's a dachshund that dresses like a rottweiler. :D

My friend has a rottie named Maeday who doesn't get along with other dogs, unless they're also black and tan colouring, so her and Watson hang out looking like big sis and little bro wore the same outfit.

Dogs with orange eyebrows are not to be trusted.

Especially not this one

It's Paladin of Souls by Lois Mcmaster Bujold, which comes after Curse of Chalion. I recommend both, actually, they're really good.

I'm (re-)reading a book right now where the main character is a woman in her 40s just learning to live again after being released from the grips of a curse in the first book of the series, and it's such a refreshing point of view in fantasy that I reread that one more than the first in the series.

I was going to mention Borrowing too, bc when I first read this that seemed to be what this was. Only, unlike Granny, Tiffany isn't picking an endpoint, so her consciousness is sort of flapping around untethered.

I always figured Mal's mention of "Is this the time?" was a signal that he heard Jackrum coming and they needed to change the subject before they all gave the game away.

Yeah, the rest of write-up seems to be in direct contradiction with "I dutifully read all the way to the end".
