If you dig down about 12 inches in the yards around the Justice Center (where the smelter was located) you will find elevated soil concentrations of arsenic and lead. High enough that it would cause great hand-wringing among the environmental community. However, nothing will be done in the yards and nothing will be done about the discovered slag because the City/County of Boulder would be responsible for the cleanup as property successor to the smelter. You can bet your bottom dollar, though that if this were private industry, the City of Boulder HOA and the County Council would be stomping their feet and gnashing their teeth and telling the owners they MUST.CLEAN.THIS.UP.
