Magpies (and crows*) are protected nongame migratory birds: you can't kill 'em without breaking the law. Crows are also protected but there is a limited hunting season on them. I think you can shoot pigeons all year, but that's about it. But I don't really agree that the birds are as bad as the squirrels.
