there are not enough "nevers" to put in the following sentence: "men should NEVER wear v-neck shirts." dude. the v-neck is a bad idea. always. and, clearly, it is a slippery slope... one that can only lead to tragedy. not to be melodramatic or anything...

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : What are the best books you've ever read?

Through Painted Deserts (Don Miller) -- love the imagery and the heart Kingdom of Couches (Will Walker) -- about communal faith in an individualistic age Ragamuffin Gospel (Brennan Manning) -- sweet words that minister to the broken and weary-hearted Don't Waste Your Life (John Piper) -- first book i read after He came into my life... He used it to set my heart upon living a life not wasted Vintage Jesus (Mark Driscoll) Confessions (St. Augustine) and all things C.S. Lewis... when i read c.s. lewis i feel like i am reading old letters from a dear friend. and really all things Piper too. also Life of Pi (Yann Martel) because the imagery is beautiful.

today i had a moment where i realized that scl has truly become a part of my daily life: something happened and i had the thought, "if this happened to jon acuff, he would write about it on scl." and on a random sidenote, i went to unc and attended CHBC for a bit while your dad was there... it's neat to see some of your dad in you! glad of how He is using you here brother :)

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : #630. Awkward opposite sex friendships.

As someone who used to work in a very male dominated area (and I got used to it, you just don't lust after every guy you work with I'm sorry to say) I think you always need to consider if you're actually being sexist or careful. In the church context of employment I'm sure it is fine, but 'out in the world' it is a different story. I've been the only member of the team to be left behind when all the guys go out for lunch for example. I've definitely had a lot of essential one on one time with men as part of my job, often in cafes so I guess that is ok?

I try to have boundaries, even if every guy I come across doesn't. I had a spate of guys I knew texting me when they were away on business, which was very suspicious. I definitely haven't kept in contact with any of them and did not meet them like they were suggesting! So as a single woman, I'm also respectful of another woman's marriage.

I once had to drop my old pastor off home in the early days of our church and his family only had one car, he looked like he was going to jump out the window the whole time and I had no idea of the 'rule' about being alone with a woman. My brain just doesn't work that way!

I think sometimes that rule should be broken and sometimes I think you need to credit the other party with a brain. Though, if you find yourself flying more just to get lifts to the airport... then you gotta think about what you're doing!
