There is only one speaker on the iPhone. The one you assume is not working is actually your microphone, according to the official iPhone User Guide

My 3GS has the old bootrom so installing iOS5 and untethered jailbreaking without baseband update was easy -- everything works fine. Thank you, Dev-Team. Your efforts are appreciated

"You have to first update to a stock 4.0 to bring up your baseband to 5.13.xx because your current baseband will not work well with firmwares above 4.0.2." I have read this elsewhere, but my iPhone 3GS is running 4.1 (8B117) which is newer than 4.0.2 quoted above and my Modem Firmware remains at 04.26.08 and I have not experienced any problems whatsoever. I am obviously concerned about how 4.3.1 will affect my iPhone when I update and JB without updating 04.26.08. I have SHSH going back to 3.1.2 so could downgrade to stock 4.0 to update 04.26.08 to 5.13.xx but will only do so as a last resort.

I have iPhone 3GS (4.1) and iPad 3G (4.2.1) -- running latest version of tinyumbrella does not save 4.3 SHSH and the log says it is too late to retrieve the SHSH on both devices. Cydia does not show 4.3 either.

This isn't absolutely true for iPhone 3G (NOT 3GS!!). A friend had “inadvertently” updated iPhone 3G to 4.2.1 05.15.xx and couldn’t be unlocked. Luckily, this iPhone had Bootloader 5.08 (5.8). I took it to 06.15.00 then brought it back down to 5.13.04, and then JB’d and unlocked. Everything is working fine. Two requirements: Bootloader 5.08 (5.8) and saved SHSH on Cydia or TinyUmbrella. Do a search for “Downgrade Baseband 6.15.00 to 5.13.04 and unlock with ultrasn0w 1.2”

Did you read this/have you done it? Update #3: For those Mac users with an old-bootrom 3GS who really know what they’re doing, here’s a minimal 3GS 4.2.1 bundle that will get you to 4.2.1 without updating your baseband. Be sure to uncheck “Activate the iPhone” using Expert mode. To actually jailbreak after you’ve restored with the help of that bundle, please use redsn0w. If you don’t know how to drop a bundle into PwnageTool.app, please hold off on 4.2.1 until it’s untethered for everyone (or wait for a nice tutorial from somewhere like http://iclarified.com)

I went to Peterborough (England) and renewed passport in two hours (120 minutes), but it cost a £130 plus £20 for rail fare. The train journey took longer than getting a new passport!

Do you have a 3G or 3GS? I suspect that your phone is a 3GS, because I have the same set up: old bootrom, 04.26.08 BB but I am on 4.1 (8B117). My phone is factory unlocked so I do just the jailbreak. There is no way that I would take my iPhone 3GS to either 05.13.XX and definitely no 06.15.XX. As TTKA1347 says, use a Mac but follow the instructions at iClarified as you have to slightly modify PwanageTool to add a file to the app -- all the instructions are at iClarified and are very clear and simple to follow. Just b patient and wait until the untethered solution is released for everyone.

The initial screen is telling you to connect the iPad to iTunes, so just go ahead and do it -- iTunes will instruct you to "activate" and register your iPad. If you have the WiFi version only, there is no SIM tray to mess about with. If you have the 3G+WiFi, look along the left hand edge, and there is a tiny hole, poke the SIM removal tool (or paperclip) into it, give it a bit of a push, and the SIM tray will pop out.

Everyone needs to calm down -- I am sure that the team are very hard at work and we'll soon get a proper jailbreak. In the meantime, you all need to understand that Apple has just made it harder to unlock 4.2.1 -- read the bit below, and if this is true, then try to understand the implications: Starting with iOS 4.2.1, the main part of the operating system checks the baseband firmware at startup, and if it doesn't match an expected signature, the phone will not boot. In the event of a failure, the iPhone will be stuck in recovery mode until it is restored to its original form. Basically, what this is saying is that iOS now checks the baseband, and if it is not up-to-date, the iPhone will not boot. So, a way has got to be found to retain old baseband but make iOS believe it is the latest one. I am sure that this will require some considerable time and effort.
