Mothers, daughters, grief, and awesome writing: it's all there.

Is Mark going to read the afterword/author note, because Jemison has something to say about this theme.

Countdown: Zero.
Well that's totally not ominous....

What else is not ominous: There's no next book on the Mark Reads Calendar.
Hey Mods, do you know if there will be a Next Book?

Point of order. A. made a new stone eater out of Alabaster not by getting him pregnant but by turning him to stone and eating him. Which Hoa is doing to Essun... taking pride in not leaving teeth marks.

Essun is specifically sleeping with Lerna, who noticed she's off her cycle. And if he asks, she'll stay with him instead of Hoa. Going with Hoa might kill (will surely kill) Essun, before the baby is born. Clue: Lerna is motivated to save this child-to-be.

Mark: the tuners are deliberately kept in the dark about .... everything

It is forbidden to teach slaves to read. They might "get ideas". See also, Frederick Douglass.
"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free."

'Who suffers so that others may experience joy, may be wealthy, may be alive? '

Ah, that's the secret of the beautiful city of Omelas... and the reason some rare people choose to be "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas."

It's only 4 pages. Go read. https://learning.hccs.edu/faculty/emily.klotz/eng...

Mark: It must be the Syl City where Hoa grew up!

But didn't Hoa say that there were other cities? His had the amethyst, other cities had other obelisks.

My head-cannon is that the city of Syl- Las Angeles has swallowed not only California but several nearby states. Still, there have to be other sprawling city-amoebas out there.

Complete coincidence, but 3 chapters a week means that each viewpoint character shows up once. Nicely done.

It is just fascinating how Evil Grandpa Shaffa can now be the good one, because "good daughter" Essun/Damaya did the hand-breaking test already... making her the 'bad mother'.

Evil Grandpa never had to hurt little Nassun, but when she figured out that Fulcrum did the hand-test on EVERYONE... and that's why her mother did it to her.... did she figure out that Shaffa had broken the hands of other little kids?

And she figured out 'that's why mama never loved her' - but she can still safely hate her mother, because 'mama is strong.' Here she is kind to Shaffa, who hurts. If Essun had ever let Nassun see that it hurt her, too, would anything have changed? Or was Nassun too young, back then?

She's old enough to break the world, but not old enough to admit that her mom is not the strong center of the universe. Cool.
