Logan, those are all great points! The way we have always looked at permits at Southwestern company is that they are necessary if required. If the process is burdensome to the average solicitor and prohibits their right to commercial free speech, we make it known and attempt to work with the municiplaity. Thanks for always doing the right thing and making a difference to the commmunities you have served over the years.

Christine - you are right about that! I think it is probably some old law on the books that needs to be adjusted. Even the police chief does not pay it much merit. There's a fine line between protective and overprotective...

Sramana Mitra on Strategy : The Time Has Come For The College Entrepreneur

Sramana - for a company that works with students to help them reach their goals financially and otherwise, you should check out Southwestern (www.southwesterninternship.com). This is a Nashville, TN based direct selling company that helps college students run their own business during their summer breaks to help offset their educational expenses. They are the oldest direct selling company in the nation (founded 1855, started with college students in 1868). Numerous successful people got their start at Southwestern where they teach you how to not only run a business while in school, but all of the traits that make people successful - inlcuding training in commuication, leadership, management, schedule, goal-setting, body language, the cycle of selling, etc. You can contact me, Trey Campbell, at 615-391-2801 if you have any questions. I'll be happy to discuss our take on how tough it is for young people to get a job and why preparing them to outwork and sell themselves better than their competition is so important.

Well, I think it is safe to assume the Girls Scouts are legitimate. Nonprofits or religious groups are able to knock in most localities without the process of permitting.

The Southwestern Company Difference Blog : "Does door-to-door sales lead to a white collar job?" Part 1

Guillaume - I thank you for your comment to the post, but I find it hard to believe that in three years of selling you did not gain anything insightful, helpful or meaningful that you carried forward with you. I respecfully will have to disagree with you. There must have been a reason you came back two more times after your first summer. If anything, you gained what many students do - the ability to problem-solve and seek solutions. Life throws punches at you and you have to duck, block or take it and rebound. I would also guess you learned life skills such as goal-setting, schedule, communications, and how to run a business just to name a few. The experience alone of running a business in another country should short-list you as a viable job candidate. The Southwestern summer program has long been a source of experience and continues to be. Contact me if you want to and I'll be happy to talk to you about your experience.
