GazetteOnline.com : Questions of trust, competition arise in light of Mercy’s cancer center announcement

Competition is good..let the free market sort this out. With all due respect to Mr. Baird... what does he know about the medical business? I say let PCI build a sky walk or tunnel if their concept is so good.. I think two businesses fighting for customers is a lot better ...

GazetteOnline.com : Czech museum/library and City Hall sign $1-a-year deal as prelude to $16-million move and expansion

The new museum ( and the older part that is being moved) will be set up on a foundation ABOVE the 2008 flood levels. There will be all parking below. Many, many tourists visited the museum before it flooded. Busloads of people on a regular basis. If you want to build a 16 million dollar project that enhances the community in a similar way..I am sure you can get land or lease for a similar price. I am glad they are rebuilding, investing in our community and building it in a way that future floods wont harm it.

KCRG : Zins Celebrating Flood Recovery By Taking Down \'We\'re Back\' Banner | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iow

It is a great story... despite other downtown restaurants failing,Zins has persevered. You dont have to like their food,or like their location-- but one has to respect that fact that they rebuilt the place, are providing jobs for the community and many people enjoy the food and drink. Free ad ?? Ok by me !! Keep up the news storys on businesses like Zins KCRG-- and to the OP- dont click to read the story or take the time to comment if it is pointless to you!

GazetteOnline.com : Enforcing the code, but not tracking violations

The Cedar Rapids Building and Zoning department are among the worst run in the City. Ask anyone who fixed up a flooded home or property. They put people through a lot more then necessary. Their attitudes are horrible and they dont try and work toward a solution. They just put up roadblocks and leave people on their own to figure things out. Also ask local builders and developers-- they have similar sentiments. Hopefully our new mayor will have the guts to look into this and make changes. We all have rules/codes to live with-- but a user friendly department with better attitudes and the drive to try and make things work would go a long way!

Hard to cut them slack when poor service and an arrogant attitude prevent them from doing well. I have no doubt that construction is down, and the economy is suffering- but their competitors seem to be doing ok? As far as them getting stung by general contractors..whos fault is that? Were the jobs not managed properly, did poor workmanship or service prevent them from getting paid?? If Ahearn was doing everything right they would have claims against these contractors that didnt pay them. I think it is terrible for any company to close, lay off workers etc. But I also think it is worse to stay in business and continue to not pay suppliers, continue to provide attitudes and bad service experience, and then close only to have the taxpayers clean up the mess. I think any company could do well if they filed a bankruptcy, erased a bunch of debt and started over. The problem is the people they owed get the shaft. This is not a good situation with ANY outcome.

This company was HORRIBLY mismanaged by Brain Ahearn. Their only chance is to get debt dismissed that they should be paying so they can "start over" and do it again! They screwed up a service call for me last year,I had to pay another company to fix it and they threatened small claims court. Taxpayers and the general public will pay for their mistakes. makes me sick!
