It's very unfortunate that a foster parent who has had a child since birth, or shortly after, should lose that child because the parents have all of a sudden decided they can parent, or the child is placed with an unknown relative who has maybe only seen the child on a few occasions. Isn't this child traumatized enough? Taking the child from the only family he/she has known and placing them with a total stranger is just inflicting the trauma all over again. I work with abused and neglected children everyday and have seen the horrors inflicted on them, if only one person would speak up for the children maybe less of this would be happening. The parents, if not arrested, are given a court date to appear with a state provided attorney if they qualify, to determine if they will be given visitation. I don't understand why this mother was allowed to visit her children so soon, maybe it's different in other counties, but that's they way it is in my county. I know this because I'm a Guardian Ad Litum , a volunteer position, for children in foster care and I represent these children in court. I would have fought to keep these children away from the mother until she had a mental health and a drug and alcohol evaluation. Even after that most of these parents aren't allowed visitation for more than 2 hrs. and it is always supervised. I've never heard of a parent being allowed to just walk away with a child without the authorities being called, since the parent would be violating a court order and would then be immediately jailed.
