Mercenary Trader : Volatility Lambada

Keep an eye on VXZ and VXV to see how option premiums are bid further out in time-- they haven't been hit as hard b/c everyone expects this big move into October, similar to the big move everyone was expecting into September

Feld Thoughts : New Orleans Rock ‘n’ Roll Mardi Gras Marathon

"Even with all the well known New Orleans spirit they haven’t figured out how to show up in force for an early Sunday morning marathon. " They're still hungover from the Saint's win, Mardi Gras, and the rest of February. If you're looking for spirit, come back out for the Red Dress Run in August!

Feld Thoughts : StartUp Visa Act Introduced By Senators Kerry and Lugar

There's a really good debate going on over at hacker news about the merits of this bill. It might provide some angles of the argument (from both sides) that haven't yet been considered-- def a read: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1148707

Feld Thoughts : Speech Recognition Is Only Part of the Future

Take a lateral step here. There's a lot of video content on the internet that has a very hard time being "searchable." I'm waiting for an A / V spider to crawl through youtube, converting speech to text, and indexing it on search. I don't think it exists yet, but it will.

It's not silly. We need to be very criticial of the stats that politicians use. 1) An absolute number is NOT relevant because there is population and economic growth. A better chart would be to index it against total population or some other metric. 2) You need a better sample size than the previous two recessions. Just because these are the ones most people remember best (recency bias) does not make them more relevant to the stats.
