Hi! So I've been on a thriller kick lately and have come to request book recommendations. I have enjoyed both the YA and "adult" thrillers I have read so far, but would really like any suggestions on what to read next :)

Already the Nassun chapters are the most heartbreaking.

Mark Reads : Mark Reads 'The Fifth Season': Chapter 17

So what actually gave away the fact that Damaya and Syenite were the same person to me was a throwaway line (but not, obviously) in the previous chapter, when Syenite and Alabaster are talking about their Guardians and their ability to negate orogeny: Syenite flinches, remembering the sound of ripping tendons, The palm of her hand stings sharply. And then of course when it's confirmed, logic follows that Essun, already established that she's gone by different names, is also the same person. Not confirmed for me yet or anyone who hasn't read further (me), but I feel like it's definitely a logical conclusion. Also like, CLEARLY THE SEASON ISN'T HAPPENING IN THESE CHAPTERS YET. It is only happening in Essun's which took me WAY TOO LONG to realize. Also WHAT HAPPENED TO BINOF??? The last we see of her Timay takes her to a room alone.

So I actually figured out it was an obelisk like maybe a page or two before Syen tries to clear the coral, which I am MASSIVELY proud of, go me. I am definitely really enjoying this so far and I don't think we've even scratched the surface of how many things are going to fuck us up.

I've finished Becoming earlier this year on audiobook and really liked it. I also liked I am Malala and Born a Crime by Trevor Noah audiobooks. I'm enjoying the bio audiobooks and I like when they're read by the author too.

Wow, hey! It's been a looong time since I posted regularly here. I used to do something like "What am I reading now" every once in awhile and thought I'd post one again. So, currently I've been reading The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin in tandem with Mark, it's my very first time with this series The Hanging Tree by Ben Aaronovitch, which is the sixth book in the Rivers of London/Peter Grant series Two Serpents Rise by Max Gladstone, second book in the Craft Sequence series A Red-Rose Chain by Seanan McGuire. I've been going through a October Daye reread and have one more book after this before I'm into new Toby territory. Anybody reading anything interesting lately?

So this chapter made me think that perhaps these storylines are not happening concurrently, when it is casually mentioned that six months pass by. Which I have a hard time believing that much time has passed in both Essun and Syenite's first chapters until now. Or I'm reading too much into things. Idk. I literally have no idea what is going to happen at all. Also more examples on how the Fulcrum is actually horrifying. Anyway I just want good things for Damaya. She tries so hard.

Chapter 1 thoughts -Okay so this is still second person, will it last the whole book? will we jump from second to third to first in this? what is the point of it? -We get a little more details on Essun's life -aside from Uche, she has a daughter! Who is missing! Is she with Jija? did she witness Uche's murder and ran away? how old is she? so she knows about her mother's...nature? -also I guess Essun can control earth quakes or something? is that what orogene do??? what the hell -also where is Essun from? is she even from this world? is she like rock boy from the prologue? is she descended from them or something like them? -Lerna here is proving himself a good friend, making sure Essun completes basic needs like eating and sleep while she's in the numb part of her grief -Lerna is also not a bigoted asshole

Mark Reads : Mark Reads 'The Fifth Season': Prologue

So I haven't read anything by NK Jemisin since Mark read 'The Inheritance Trilogy' years ago. I'm going to try my best to do a little review for every chapter as I'm reading along, mostly to try to sort my thoughts out but I want to get back in to commenting on Reads and Watches posts if possible. I'll definitely miss seeing Mark yell at what he's reading but I actually was more active when I carefully read his reviews. Okay some thoughts- -so, the prologue is second person POV, which admittedly is not my favorite, it's very hard for me to actually get into text that's 2nd POV, but it is a type that's fitting for shorter sections like prologues -this narrator has some character, so either we find out who the narrator is at some point during this book, or the trilogy, or it's just...the way the book is -we learn about Essun, who's toddler son was beaten to death by her husband--why? I mean, Uche is obviously a BABY and there's no good reason for a father to murder his child, but what were his reasons? -did that guy actually...end the world? why? how?! -and then there's old-young rock boy chomping on rocks imitating human behavior WHYY

Mark Reads : Mark Reads 'The Shepherd's Crown': Chapter 2

I cannot believe we are on the last DW book. It’s been such a part of Mark Reads for years, and we’re going to end a long, long chapter. And we’re going to have to say goodbye to these characters, and one of them much sooner than we want to. I was not expecting this, and if it was going to happen, certainly not the second chapter.
