Their CEO said something and I'm not quoting it but it is very close that only 6% of their profits came from gasoline. These companies deserve to make a profit, the have been forced to look in dangerous parts of the world (i.e Nigeria, Venezuela, etc) for oil and they have to insure that their employees are safe. The real problem here is that the number of operating refineries has been cut in half in the last 25 years, so the excess crude cannot be refined into the various products at nearly a fast enough rate.
