Race Relations Project : Tent Cities in Haiti

Haiti is trying to recover from a horrible earthquake. I think this cool, that Haiti people are not down and still rejoicing. That tells you a lot. A huge disaster hit and life is tough, but they still have a good time. I think the best way we could Haiti is to start small projects and then move to larger ones. For small projects we would help clean shops and help people to get back on their feet. We would try to start to have shops open to get people jobs. Once that is done we would move to government. Help clean and rebuild buildings. Sam is right where would they move the waste, they is no space for that stuff. That's why I think we should start with small shops to move the trash to a place to dump it at. Once that place is found, we should just move all the stuff there to get Nations attention to help Haiti will waste and help rebuild their buildings. Yes, it would be tough to move stuff around, because they is no dozier to move the waste or trash. So I think everyone would need to help in and pinch in will all the stuff. If everyone would help, the job would get done a lot faster and Haiti would start to regain hope back. Think if one large group of helpers would come to help Haiti would be great, but image a construction crew comes down and starts to rebuild the buildings. That would be crazy and awesome. That would be the best thing for Haiti. Once the society comes together and jobs start to open, life would be easier for them. Giving them food is good, but not good enough, because then they will just rely on you for the food. They wouldn't work cause they know they are getting food. Once we stop giving them food, they will have tons of problems. So rebuilding buildings is the best bet to help them, while that's going on. Countries should say if you want food you need to help rebuild. The work would get done faster and Haiti would recover faster. The society is huge for any country. Cause people need to get jobs and money in order for food, water, and supplies. A healthy community is huge for people to live a good life. Everyone wouldn't be scared of not having enough food and money wouldn't be an issue for them. People can start to live their whole lives over again and become successful. I think that's the best bet for Haiti. Food and water is important but getting the society back on it's feet and having people get jobs is huge for Haiti.

Race Relations Project : What is the end goal...really?

I think the final goal is to realize whats going on in the world. That's a huge step because not many people think about those things. When people don't think about those things, they don't see the whole picture. They only see through their lenses and not other peoples' lenses. For people who think outside the box is an important step, because you realize whats going and not worrying just about yourself. The other step is do to something, I mean knowing whats going on is big, but doing something is even bigger. Just imagine people helping out with each other and the world a better place. That could happen, it just takes people out of their comfort zone. Some people are in their comfort zone or so called bubble and only worry about themselves and not others. So people don't want to get out of their comfort zone because they don't care about other people. I just think that's crazy and to tell you the truth, that's the real world. People only looking out for each other, instead of helping out the people in need. Some people do get out of their comfort zone and help out people in need. They realize that they have so much stuff and some people don't have anything. They also are thankful for having stuff and using it and not wining like other people. Did you ever watch the movie called Pay it Forward? That movie is so good and people should do somethings in the movie, it would make the world a safer place to live. If one person gets a gift or someone does something nice, they would have to do something nice to another person. Before you know it, everyone would be doing something to each other. Just think about that. That is crazy, a simple thing like that would make everyone lives happier. I just don't understand some people and their actions towards others. Think of the simplest rule, treat others as you want to be treated. That's crazy if people want to get respected from others, well they have to respect them first. People want the best things in the world, they either want the best t.v. or best car, because they want others to feel jealous. Those examples are people not thinking outside of their box and only worrying about themselves. Just think no more violence, wars, or battles. People caring for each other and helping each other out that would be awesome.

Race Relations Project : I really want to know also...

This is a great question. This class you don't really learn things. The main thing about this class is to open your eyes and see the whole picture. To understand what people are going through, and to see how it would be different if you were another person that is a different color than you. There are no facts in this class. Well there are, but they are to help you understand the topic. I think Sam's main job is to get people think outside of the box and extend their view on things. For example learn what another race is going. Like racism, problems with the family, trying to get a job, or trying to find a friend. Though sometimes Sam goes over weird things, but thats him and every one is different. I'm glad that people are different, because the world would be boring if everyone was the same. Just imagine people wearing the same clothes doing the exact same hobbies. There would be nothing to do, thats what so cool about this world. People can be who every they want. I'm so glad god made us this way. Life is a journey, you can decide what path you want to take and see where it takes you. God has been here for us and always helping out people and putting them on the right track. Yea, god would give us test for time to time, but those test will help us. Those tests builds us up and makes us stronger. That's what so cool about the lord. He is never going to leave us and will always be there for us. He gives us advice to help us. The bible is so cool, it teaches us how to live and follow Christ. All the stuff in the bible helps us in our lives. Give us advices when we are going through problems and tell us. All the teaching in the bible is about helping others and being kind and polite to people. Also, to do the right things in life, which would help us out. I don't understand the one time Sam had God step out of the room, I just think that was wrong, cause you can't take god out of the room. I'm not bashing on other religion, I only talk about my religion. I don't treat other religion disrespect. I mean Sam don't bash other religion, it's not right and it hurts people's feelings. Overal Sam's job is to get us think outside of our box. And I just wish SAm would stop bashing other religion it's rude to people and not funny. That's really all I got to say about this question and my feeling towards religion.

Race Relations Project : How Can We Ever "Win"?

I have a question about the L.L.Bean issue. Not all black people do the same thing. For example black people by the pound, there is nothing wrong with that. The typical stereotype for black people is that they can't swim, but to tell you some white people can't swim either and I'm sure that other races of people can't swim too. I think people stereotype races and when they would look at the pictures that would go against the stereotype; they would say that the picture is trying to make the other race look like another race. I don't believe that everyone is different and to stereotype people and say that they don't do white things is wrong. They are no white, black, or brown group that does only what they are classified to do. The other picture was a black guy in L.L.Bean coat and jeans. People are saying that picture is wrong because black people don't wear those kinds of clothes. You can be surprise with what people wear. Again, having another stereotype about black people and what they wear. I'm sure not all black people wear the same clothing, because nobody wants to be the same, everyone wants to be themselves. I think there's a problem with people, thinking that a specific race only does certain things. They can't think outside of the box and realize that each person has their own personality. To classify people into groups is wrong thing to do, everyone wants to be themselves. Another thing people want to have color to their product, because they don't want to be consider racist. The problem with that is some people or like well that race doesn't wear that, or do that because their race never do that type of stuff. People just have to get over that and see the whole picture instead of their own. The other side of the issue is when a product only shows a certain races that wears or do their product. Then people would be saying "O that group is racist, because it only shows a certain race that uses the product." They are no easy way out of this issue. People just have to get over it. People need to stop stereotyping races and realize that everyone is different. Some people can't do that, because they were taught that a certain race does this. To solve this problem people need to speak up, and others would help teach them that not everybody do the same stuff.

Race Relations Project : What are all of you thinking about Asians?

This is a great question; Sam never goes over about Asians. He usually talks about white or black or brown people, but nothing on Asians. Maybe Sam is going to go over Asians later in the semester. The other question was about if you can tell the difference between Asians and Asians Americans. To tell you the truth I can't really tell the difference between Asians and Asians Americans because they seem the same. It's the same for everyone for me, you can't really tell if someone is American or not. To me, everyone seems the same to me, a person with their own personality. But I did like what Sam said about the majority of the same color would say something wouldn't be about their race, but the person's personality. And if there's a minority in the group they would be look at their race more than their personality. I agree with this because sometimes I catch myself putting one person actions into a race. It's tough being the minority because nobody can back you up and usually people would be against you. Also, the minority would always get pick on by the majority. The world could be safer if somebody in the majority group would speak up and tell the rest of the group that picking on the minority is wrong and mean. If they don't listen it's their fault, because all the rude comments will come back at them sometime. Also, if your with a group that's rude to other people, you should find another group, because you may never know that the group will make fun at you someday. The more you stay with someone who's mean and rude, you'll eventually start to act like that, because you have been around with this person for a long time and it would seem normal for you, but not for others. Just think if you leave the group, they would wonder why you left the group. If you tell them the truth, it would take them a while to take in what you said to them. They would realize what they're doing to others and change their attitudes. See what you can do, if you stand up and speak what is right. Everyone could change the world if they speak up whats right. The world would be a safer place to live and everyone would happier. Yea, it's easier to not speak up and chill with others, but that's right. You'll hurt people's feelings and you probability never thought that the person you pick on could be your future boss or a government officer. Overall, stand up in what you believe don't like a group change who you are. Be yourself.

Race Relations Project : Does this rudeness thing cut both ways?

The topic was that when the white people could say something and it was something harsh against color people, the color people shout and was angry with the comment and when the color people could say something and they said harsh things back at the white people, but white people don't make any drama about the comment. I think this is how racism spreads; people need to get over with the comments and know that the color of a skin is not a big deal. There are two ways to stop racism people ignoring the comments they receive from people or people stop making racist comments. I just think racism will continue as long there are humans, because racism is like terrorist. There will always be someone that wants to take over the world. You can stop terrorism from spreading but you can't stop it. Racism is the same way somebody were born there racist families and taught how to be racist. I'm not saying that kid will be racist, until someone tells him that racism is bad and that someone that the kid looks up to. The parents are a major part of influencing their children, but children have stars or athletes that they look up to. If those stars or athletes could tell the children that racism is bad and how to stop it, racism wouldn't be bad. Racism was really bad back in the day, but now it's not as bad. Racism is decreasing throughout the years but not totally gone. Another way to get rid of racism is to stop saying rude racist jokes or comments at all. Even with your friends you shouldn't say anything racist, because you don't know if some else is listening to your conversation. Also, things tend to spread around and if you say a racist thing, it will come back at you. That's when people get angry and upset and start yelling at other people, because they can't say anything nice. When that person got what they said back right at them, they don't like that feeling. Well tough luck, because you set yourself up. That's what I think how racism stays alive.

Race Relations Project : Are Whites the Only People Willing to Humiliate Themselves?

Wow, I never realize that before about the Bachelor show about how it's most white people in it. To tell you the truth, I never watch the Bachelor before. But, yea I don't understand that how ABC wouldn't have diversity on their shows. Maybe only the white girls only tried out for the show and not anybody else. That just doesn't make sense at all. Maybe the Bachelor picks the top 20 or whatever the number is and he just picks the white girls and not anybody else. It could be ABC and they only want white people in their Bachelor show because of ratings or some other reason. Just think if BET would have a Bachelor show would they just have all black people or have all different kinds of people. Nobody knows about that, I've seen parts of the BET network and they have a diverse of people on their shows. I've seen parts of other shows and they aren't all white people on it. For example, the show Psych I love this show about a young adult guy that wants to be a detective, but the district of the cops won't let him pass or he couldn't pass the detective test. So, Shawn tries to be a Psychic and solves ordinarily crimes like a detective, but the rest of the police think that he is really a Psychic. By the way Shawn is a white guy, but his partner that always with is a black guy name Gus. I would say that the police department is mostly white, but there are some diversity in their department. Not all criminals are color people, it would be different color people every show, one time a white guy, then maybe a white female, black male, Latino female, never the same color on a normal basis. And my other shows have diverse people in it too. So, I just think that the world today is getting rid of racist shows and opening up to more diverse shows and having different kinds of people on it. I think shows aren't that racist anymore than probability before. There is always going to be color or diverse in shows or in news. If you think about it, the network wants to the best ratings than other shows. So, if they want to expand they would need to have diverse people in their shows and news to draw tons of people of different race. The more race they would have the more ratings they would probability get. I'm not saying if the network has diverse people that they will automatically get good ratings. The people the network hire has to be good and not boring and keep people interested. Finally, I just think shows are opening their eyes and seeing the big picture of having a diverse show.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans: Question One

So the question was, when we should start educating children about the Native Americans. Not just about Native Americans, but the mass killing that went on in the past. I think high school would be the best option to educate students about the Native Americans. If you would teach middle or elementary school, I would think that they wouldn't understand the whole issue. For students in elementary school, all they are worrying about recess and gym class. After a while, I think the students wouldn't remember what they learned from elementary school. I don't even remember much for elementary school. In middle school, the students are older and going through puberty. So, the students are learning how to take notes from teachers. Also, they are learning the basics to improve their academics. Students are going through another problem, what kind of person they're going to be in high school and after high school. So, I think students are going through many stages during middle school. In high school the students start to do better in grades, in order to get into college or even to pass high school. I think if the students work hard in class, they will understand the material the teacher is going over. Also, I think they would understand the material better than elementary and middle school. Plus, I think more students would get involved if any kind of information got to them. I think they would try to improve and help out with the conflict. You could say that many high schoolers are going through stages of their lives. The SAT and ACT would be the students main focus during high school. Relationships could be another factor that could distract the students. Every grade level they going to be distractions for every students, but the main reason why I pick high school, because they would probability understand the material better than any other grade level. The whole information on Native Americans could take a couple of weeks to go over. The content would be that Native Americans were the first people in the United States. The teacher could talk about sermonizes and beliefs. Then the teacher would discuss about how the Europeans came over in the United States and took over the Native American's land. Also, the teacher could describe how the Europeans trick the Native Americans for land. Some Europeans would force to force out the Native Americans. The teacher could say that the Native Americans only had bow and arrows, while the settlers used guns and armor. I just thought of something that the teachers could use to help explain about the Native Americans. The movie Avatar is a great example how foreigners came into somebody's land and started to take over their land. The only part that I would explain to the students is that the Native Americans didn't have a happy ending like in the movie Avatar.

Race Relations Project : LGBT Class: Question Six

So the question that was asked was why lesbians are more accepted than gay men. My point of view is that guys are supposed to be tough and strong. To see guys who hold hands and pick out clothes that best fit themselves are very strange to watch. Also, sometimes gays talk with a higher pitch of voice and sway their hands around, it just doesn't fit right in society. Your body is made to reproduce with other women, not other men. That's the way nature goes and that's the way it should be done. Maybe some guys don't fit with other men or woman, so they just want to be different than everyone else. I think people just don't see other guys with each other as romantic partners. Now for lesbians, I guess people could see other girls with each other. Plus, I think that some guys like when they are lesbians around them. To tell you the truth, I don't know why other men like girls mating out with each other. Women are better together than guys, I guess from peoples' perspective. My opinion is that gays and lesbians shouldn't be acceptable to everybody. Look at our bodies we were made to reproduce with the other sex. There are people out in the world to be different, which I agree. People don't want to be the same with everything. The world would be boring and not interesting at all. But for some people they want to be notice so they'll say that they're gay are lesbians because they are different and unique from ordinary people. They want to be on TV for rights and to be allowed in the world. I don't think people are chosen to be gay or lesbians. People chose for themselves to be straight or curve. I heard people saying that they were born gay or lesbians and they have to live their life that way. People who change would say that they felt comfortable around with the same sex and not the opposite. Could you think that men have a better bond between each other than women of course. Men can talk to each other and do manly things like watching sports, golfing, eating food, and sleeping. With girls it's different you have to do things you both like and agree on. So no matter what, it will feel different being around girls than guys. I just can't see guys holding hands with each other and making out. It's the same with women, I can't see them making out with each other. I think different is good, but not to change your sex partner is completely a whole different story. We just weren't made to be with the same sex as romantic partners.

Race Relations Project : Swinging Past the Other End of the Ideological Spectrum on the Way to the Intellectual Gray

I like Sam's lecture had on Tuesday. I think it really got people's attention. To see the world in a different perspective. That new perspective will open people's eyes and see the world at a whole new level. His lecture really got me thinking about the world. That not all people have the access to help them through their careers. Some people have disabilities or money issues with their family. With those problems going on, it's holding them back from going far. It's not their choice to have all these issues on them, but I guess things happen and you have to move forward. There could be a reason for all those issues, either to put you in a specific job or do a specific task. Sometimes you'll have to find the positives to understand why something happen. That's so sad that people don't have the same opportunities as others to achieve in school. I like how Sam showed the video about Oprah and the students from two different schools. That one school had computers, pool, big classroom size and enough supplies for almost every student. While the other school didn't have water in their pool, and they had computers, but they were missing parts and wasn't advances as the other school. I like seeing the students reaction to seeing a different school. Now for the other side with free choice. You can decide to work hard and go far in life or just coast and not worry about their life. People who work hard will be rewarded sometime in their life. Some people don't believe this, because they worked hard and there was no reward. But for those people I think will have to wait for a while to see how their hard work paid off. I hope everyone works hard cause if you work then other people will see how much desire you have to work. Who knows you may inspire others to work hard and before you know it, the whole country is working hard. It's like a disease could spread around the world and change peoples' lives. I like how Sam said you have to be in the middle to understand how things are going through life. I understand what he said, because not everyone is going to have a free choice in their lives. Or even determinism where people have problems or road blocks in their lives and it's hard for them to go far in life. Cause if you're on one side you're not going to think about the other side. You'll just think that everyone has a choice or problems. I really enjoyed Sam's lecture and I hope he continues to be in zone all the time.

Race Relations Project : Avatar and the White Man's Burden

I'll admit that I go to the movies a couple of times a month. It depends what type of movies are playing and if I would want to watch them. I like action, funny, adventures, sport, and war movies, so that's a lot of movies that I go out and watch. When I first saw the movie preview for Avatar, I thought this movie was going to be okay. So eventually I went and saw Avatar. It was alright, wasn't worth watching again in the theaters. But when I was in the theater watching Avatar, I thought this movie was like Pocahontas. Native people living a normal life until new or foreign people come over to their land and start to take over it. So a battle breaks out between the Native people and foreign people. The Native people don't have high tech weapons like the foreign people. The battle was more favored towards the foreign people. The Native people are struggling to survive until one of foreign person takes the Native side. Also, I don't understand how this movie got so many awards. The thing is I thought the movie was okay, but it was in my perspective and not others. So I'm guessing this movie was amazing to a lot more people. I'm glad that the movies are doing well in business, because everyone is going through money problems. Anyways I think this movie didn't have any meaning towards white people are better than everyone else. But I think each person who watches Avatar will each have a different perspective than everyone else. It happens that Brooks think that Avatar was about white people ruling the planet. Why can't we just watch movies and not go into depths of the meaning of the movie. Some movies want to get their meaning out. I just like to sit down and relax and don't have to worry about finding the meaning of the movie. There's too much stuff to think about in the world, family, friends, and issues in the world. Like the problem in Haiti and the economy. So for Brooks and other movie reviewers just relax and enjoy the movie. Movies with meaning could be positive or negative. The positives are that it teaches people that good things happen when you do something the right way or something like that. The negatives could teach people that you can get out of trouble if you hide the evidence. The positives and negatives are just examples that I made up of some meanings to movies. Yea overall just relax and have some fun watching movies and don't worry about finding the meaning of the movie.

Race Relations Project : Racism Looks Pretty Mild on This Side of the Atlantic

I'm wondering if there is any racism going on in any other sport games? Because I haven't heard any news about other sports that have racist fans. I'm hoping that there isn't any racism going on other sports. Racism ruins So I think racism will stop spreading if people will speak up. If you don't speak up than your letting racism spread.

I like when that one person who controls the world cup, said that if any racist comments or flags happens in the games. He would stop the game and end it, because of the racism. I think this action will control the amount of racism that goes on the games, because everyone loves their team and they would not want to ruin it by being racist. I would too lose my cool, if somebody was being racist to me. I'm glad that there was a player holding back the player with the soccer ball. It tells you that they care for him and don't want him to do something stupid. I wonder what would happen if the player left the field with the soccer ball? Would the soccer committee fine the player or would they just give him a warning? I'm surprised that all racism things were on ESPN and not the newspaper. Racism is huge news around the world, because many people don't support it. They would send complaints to the soccer committee about all the racism that goes on the soccer games. Maybe that’s why the soccer committee was trying to keep the racism on the soccer fields away from the newspapers.

When I first saw the video, I was in shock. I knew the world had racism in the past. But I didn't know that racism would still be as bad as the past. I know that you can't stop racism, because it will always go on. No matter what, people are going to say what they want. I wish we could stop racism, but we can speak up about racism. If you hear someone say something racist, then speak up and tell them that's not cool. If you don't speak up, then you're letting racism spread. I couldn't understand why the Europeans didn't stop the racism that was going on during the soccer games. It sounded like racism was going on in the past, and the soccer committee didn't take any actions towards it. I can understand about the rule if a fan would do something racist, they would penalizes the team that the person supports. The problem would be if the fans pretend they are on the other team, so that their team doesn't get penalizes. It would cause so many issues on the soccer committee.

But I'm wondering how long it takes to get Haiti back together? I think Haiti will sometime get back to where it’s supposed to go, but it will be so much better. With all the support, Haiti wouldn't be called the poorest country in the world.

I'll admit that people will make mistakes in life and they didn't even try it. But a true person will learn from that mistake and not make the same mistake twice. There are second chances in life. So those people who care about themselves will soon realize it. They will either change or not.

People will stop caring and continue with their lives like nothing happen. Most people only care about themselves and not people in need. If that person sees someone donate, they would want to donate too. To have themselves look good and tell people about it too. So people can't say that they didn't cared or donated anything. It is sickening how people care about themselves because they don't realize how good of life they have. They don't realize that millions of people don't have cell phones, cars, computers, and even homes. Do you hear them complain about their lives? There is good news through not everyone cares about themselves. They are people who spend their time helping out desperate people in need. The thing is you don't see it, because they don't want to announce that they help out people. Some people risk their lives by going to another country to help out. Not all countries like each other, but if there are also people in need. The love and caring people will go out and help them.

I totally agree with you jerseyshore. I grew up as a Christian and I'm still one today. I go through hard times too and I think everybody does. The thing that matters is how to respond to that challenge. You either take the easy way out or go through hard way, but in the long run it will help you out. The earthquake was a challenge for countries to help out. You can see the responds Haiti got through many different countries. The Haiti incident was shocking and terrible. There was a purpose for this earthquake to happen. Maybe it's to warn other countries how fast and sudden earthquakes come. The earthquake in Haiti got people on their toes, and makes them realize that anything could happen. But look countries are coming together, uniting, and helping out Haiti. This is making people come out and volunteering to help out Haiti. Either donating money or food, and for some people going down to Haiti to help them out. I bet when some people donated, they had a good feeling. That good feeling could lead them to start their organization. Maybe that organization will help thousands of people in need.
